Those who were at Wrigley on Friday witnessed a wild one. The 2 teams combined for 7 runs in the 1st inning, there were multiple lead changes, and a bullpen implosion.
Tom Gorzelanny (1-4) has pitched well all season but hasn’t been rewarded for it due to a lack of offense from his teammates. Today was his worst performance by far. Gorzelanny allowed 5 runs on 9 hits in only 5 innings, including 3 runs in the 1st.. He walked 4 while striking out 7. His offense did bail him out for a change, but he didn’t figure in the decision.
The score was tied at 6 in the 8th when Sweet Lou went to Big Z in the bullpen. Zambrano imploded allowing 4 runs. A 3-run homer was all it took to deflate the Cubs. James Russell also allowed the Pirates’ 10th run.
After the game, Zambrano was calm with the media saying that at first he was mad about the switch to the ‘pen but now he accepts it as part of the business.
Offensively, Marlon Byrd added 2 hits and an RBI while Alfonso Soriano also added 2 hits with 2 RBIs. Aramis Ramirez had an encouraging day at the plate with his first multi-hit game since Opening Day. Starlin Castro went 1 for 2 with 2 walks. Xavier Nady and Tom Gorzelanny also added RBIs.
With the implosion of the bullpen, the Cubs fell 10-6 and are now 0-4 against the Pirates.
The Cubs will look to take game 2 tomorrow at 12:05. Ryan Dempster (2-3) will be on the mound for the Cubs while Paul Maholm (2-3) will pitch for the Pirates.
