White Sox Lucas Harrell Wins in Major League Debut

For Lucas Harrell, there must have been a less pressurized way to make his major league debut that trying to preserve an 11-game home winning streak for a first place team.

But he was up to the challenge, going six innings in a 6-1 victory over Oakland and becoming the first White Sox starter to win his major league debut since Kip Wells in 1999. The 11 in-between were 0-5.

“I feel proud of this kid because he’s come a long way,” manager Ozzie Guillen said. “He came from prospect to who-is-this-guy back to prospect. He went through everything in our organization to pitch in the big leagues.”Harrell was given a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an RBI single by Alex Rios, following an infield single and stolen base by Juan Pierre.

Harrell struggled in the first and second innings, when he walked four batters, but retired the A’s in order in the third inning. In the fourth, the A’s tied the game on a two-out infield single off Harrell’s foot.

Sox hitters gave him breathing room with three runs in the third inning on RBI from A. J. Pierzynski, Andruw Jones and Gordon Beckham.
