Randy Wells showed the Cubs faithful why he was the choice for fourth starter. Wells pitched 6 excellent innings only surrendering one run which was a Willie Bloomquist homer, “The home run was a mistake,” Wells said. He explained that he didn’t want to walk the lead-off batter, hindsight is 20/20. Geo Soto was 2/3 in the win and Aramis Ramirez continued his hot start going 2/4 with a run scored. Other than the solid pitching of Randy Wells the Cubs bullpen pitched in with 3 innings of scoreless relief including Kerry Wood and Carlos Marmol’s third consecutive apperance, Wood tossed 1 scoreless and Marmol pitched 1 hitless inning leading to his second save of the year.

The long awited first career start of Andrew Cashner went very well for the rookie, up until the 6th inning. While pitching in the 6th inning the young righty was lifted due to tightness in his throwing shoulder. Cashner ended with a solid line, 5.1 innings surrendering only2 hits and 1 earned run and struck out 2. Starlin Castro continued to his hot sophomore campaign going 2/5 with a run scoring double raising his average to .476. Centerfielder Marlon Bryd showed signs of heating up as he went 3/4. With closer Carlos Marmol not available due to pitching 3 games in a row Quade went with Sean Marshall who surrendered a run but was good enough to nail it down with his first save of the year.

The Cubs were unable to close out the sweep as they fell to the D-Backs by a final of 6-4. Dempster wasn’t as sharp as usual and gave up 5 runs on 10 hits in his 7 innings. The top of the order continued to be hot for the North Siders as Fukadome went 2/3, Marlon Byrd went 2/4 and Ramirez hit his first of the year.
