Halladay Can’t Take the Heat, Cubs Defeat Phillies 6-1

On paper, Roy Halladay versus Rodrigo Lopez looked like a mismatch of epic proportions.

Halladay is the Phillies‘ uncontested ace on a staff full of aces, while Lopez is a journeyman the Cubspicked up off the scrap heap.

But Halladay lasted only four-plus innings Monday because of the extreme heat, while Lopez allowed one run on five hits in 62/3 innings in the Cubs’ 6-1 win over the Phillies.

“That’s why you show up every day optimistic, in spite of the struggles,” manager Mike Quade said. “That’s the way I look at things. I’ve seen it a million times.”

Perhaps, but not with the Cubs, who improved to 39-58 with the win.

The humidity and game-time temperature of 91 degrees made it an uncomfortable night for all involved, turning it into a matter of survival. The Cubs, amazingly, were the survivors.

Carlos Pena and Aramis Ramirez each homered and drove in a pair of runs, while the 35-year-old Lopez did the rest.

Making his fifth start, Lopez reduced his ERA to 3.55. Lopez has a 1.84 ERA over his last four starts since rejoining the rotation.

Lopez left the mound in the seventh to a standing ovation from the crowd of 38,183.

“That was awesome,” he said. “Being here at Wrigley, these fans have always been supportive with the team, but me being part of it feels great. I really appreciate it. It’s priceless. This moment will stay with me forever.”
