Will Ryne Sandberg be on Theo Epstein’s Radar?

If the Cubs can secure Ryne Sandberg as their new manager, you may want to check LavaTickets to secure some Cubs tickets! With Theo Epstein finally name Cubs GM (for the most part), he will now start figuring out the coaching staff. All of the coaching staff is up in the air, especially manager Mike Quade. So…will Ryne Sandberg be on Theo Epstein’s radar to replace Mike Quade? We really are not sure yet as he hasn’t officially been named the Cubs general manage, but reports are coming out of what he may or may not sign to the front office/coaching staff.

According to the Chicago Sun-Times, the Cubs want to re-unite with former minor league manager and Cubs Hall of Famer 2nd baseman Ryne Sandberg.  “Sources close to the Cubs, along with those close to Sandberg, have said in recent weeks that they expect a reconciliation this off-season. Although the sources said the Cubs hadn’t talked to Sandberg about it as of Wednesday, that’s expected to change quickly once Epstein is officially in place.”

As it’s been reported, Theo Epstein did interview Ryne Sandberg to manage their Triple A team the past Winter, but Sandberg opted for the same position with the Philadelphia Phillies. When both teams met up in the playoffs, Sandberg was in attendance to watch the game. Ryne Sandberg’s team knocked out Theo Epstein’s Triple A team.

The same report mentioned “it is unclear if Sandberg would be a candidate to be the Cubs new manager or if he would hold a prominent spot on the Cubs’ coaching staff.”

Gordon Wittenmyer said “Ryne Sandberg has been open to returning to the Cubs since Jim Hendry was fired and one of the sources Wittenmyer spoke with suggested Sandberg would be willing to accept a coaching job on the big league staff.”

So…if Epstein found another manager, could Ryne Sandberg be the bench coach. If that were to happen, it would make lots of sense.

Once Epstein is officially in place, he’s expected to address the coaching staff. That means no one is safe and if Epstein can, he may try and bring coaches from the Red Sox to the North Side.

Another candidate to manager the Cubs could be the current Red Sox bench coach DeMarlo Hale. Hale was Terry Francona’s bench coach over in Boston. Hale is 50 and a Chicago native. Even if Hale didn’t get the manager gig, there’s a chance he could still cove over and be the new Cubs bench coach.

With all this said, George Ofman hears Ryne Sandberg is not on Theo Epstein’s short list to be manager right now.

In a 2nd tweet from George Ofman, he’s surprise that Sandberg is not on his list and even more surprise Mike Quade could be back. Let’s just hope not!

As of right now, this may be more speculation than anything else but we don’t know. Epstein is reportedly starting to figure all that out and these reports could be true then. Theo Epstein’s final announcement should be made soon, when they finally figure out the compensation. Compensation going from the Cubs to the Red Sox. It’s expected to be done very soon. I guess we’ll just wait for the official word and then…

I hope Ryne Sandberg is named Chicago cubs manager next year.
mike Quade should not be back in 2012 he did a bad job in 2011 his by the book failed this year.
mike Quade was outmatched this year.
Ryne Sandberg gained the experience he needed managing the past 5 years in the minors.
Ryne Sandberg has the baseball smarts to be a good major league manager.
He has managed some of the young players on the current cubs roster which helps.
It is time for Ryne Sandberg to get his chance.
If Ryne Sandberg is the new manager they can hire Demarlo Hale as his bench coach if DEmarlo doesn’t get the Redsox managerial job.
The cubs need a winning culture again for 2012 and beyond.
Iam glad Theo Epstein is in charge of the Baseball operations for the cubs.
