    Chicago Beer

    Goose Island Brewpubs (part 2)

I will always consider Goose Island’s Clybourn location to be the better of the two, after all it is the original. Hidden away just north of North Ave between Clybourn and Marcey, this location can be a little tough to find if you don’t know where you’re going. The easiest way to find it is by the big Bellini sign on the side of the building. Yes, the store adjacent to the Goose Island Brewpub is a baby furniture store.

At first it seems that the brewpub is just going to be a small spot tucked into a little strip mall, but once you’re inside you’ll see how expansive the place really is. With multiple levels and various rooms, the Goose Island Clybourn location has plenty of space for even the biggest of parties. The main bar gets cramped quickly, though, so plan your visits accordingly.

One of the best features at the Goose Island Brewpubs is the beer flight. It’s a great way to test out some new beer styles and try everything that Goose Island has to offer.

As you can see by the picture above, your server will set you up with a nice tasting sheet and some basic instructions. The instructions will come in very handy if you’re just getting your feet wet in the craft beer movement. Of the four beers you see listed there (Time of the Saison, Maude, Five Rings [cask], and 100 degrees [cask]), my favorite was the Maude. It was malty, tangy, and refreshingly sour. The Maude’s a tasty sour beer that makes you realize there’s much more out there than your standard yellow fizzy beverage.

The food is also very good. I went with the duck poutine, which was fantastic. It’s very rich and heavy, so make sure you pair it up with a lighter, refreshing beer. Honestly, having a Bourbon County Stout with the duck poutine my kill you.

Head on over to Goose Island Clybourn for all the great beer and take in a brewery tour while you’re there. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and will gladly explain the finer points of their establishment.

Kyle, looks like you went to Wrigleyville. I’m yet to get a flight over there. I know at Clybourn they let you pick whatever beers you want. Wrigleyville may stick you with their 4 standards; which are good, but not nearly as exciting.

Correct, I was at the Wrigleyville one. I believe the flight menu is ever changing, however. I don’t know how often it changes, but it’s been different the few times I’ve been there.
