Will Ian Stewart Break Camp?

Chicago Cubs’ 3B Ian Stewart continues to have an unhealthy spring training. Stewart underwent an MRI on his left quad that has been bothering him. Stewart injured his quad in the beginning of spring training and hasn’t seen much action in the field.

Stewart did play in a minor-league game over the weekend, but that’s all the action. Stewart was supposed to player in another minor-league game over the weekend, but opted not too because his quad keeps acting up. If Stewart was to player in the second minor-league game, he would have then been ready to play in a cactus league game. However, with Stewart’s quad not feeling right, everything was pushed back.

Stewart came into camp with high expectations. Hus wrist is 100% healthy for the first time in a few years and wanted to show how he can hit with a ‘new’ wrist.

Cubs’ manager Dale Sveum on if Stewart can get enough at-bats before opening day; “I don’t know if he has enough time”.

If the Cubs were to cut Stewart before April 1st – opening day, the Cubs don’t have to pay his contract (2 million). The contract the Cubs gave Stewart had a opt-out cause and was prepared like that. The contract is looking pretty clever right now.

Going into spring training, I would have said there’s no way Stewart is not making the team out of camp. Now I think there’s a good chance Stewart will not be on the roster come opening day. It all depends on if the Cubs want to take a chance with Stewart or not. If not, Luis Valbuena will be the starting 3B and Brett Lillibridge will become the back-up 3B.

If the Cubs do keep Stewart on their roster come opening day, he may start the season on the DL. Manly because he didn’t get enough at-bats in spring training and will rehab to start the 2013 season.

If the Cubs were to release Stewart, the roster opens up another spot for a player to make the team of whom would not if Stewart took a spot.

We still have two weeks left of camp and let’s just see how the rest of spring training plays out.
