Matt Garza on track to return next week against Pirates

Matt Garza has not pitched an inning for the Chicago Cubs since July 21, 2012. But his return is quickly approaching as he is expected back next week in Pittsburgh, barring any setbacks.

After rehabbing throughout the offseason, Garza was on pace to be ready for opening day. But he faced another setback in Spring Training after injuring his arm. He would begin the season on the disabled list and was expected to be on the shelf until late May.

Garza’s rehab process has been right on time and it appears he will return to the Cubs next week. On Thursday night, Matt made his final minor league rehab outing for the Iowa Cubs(AAA). In six innings, Garza shut out the Tucson Padres while allowing just two hits and striking out six. The Cubs allowed him to throw 75 pitches tonight and 53 were strikes.

A great addition for the Cubs as they will add one of the best starters back into the already impressive rotation this season. It appeared the Cubs would have a difficult decision to make when Garza returned but after another bad outing on Tuesday, Carlos Villanueva will most likely be bumped to the bullpen.

The Cubs begin a three game series in Pittsburgh next Tuesday night. If Garza feels good, he may get the nod to start the series.
