Keith Suspended One Game for High Stick
The NHL Department of Player Safety has suspended Blackhawks’ defenseman Duncan Keith 1 game for a high stick to the face of LA’s Jeff Carter. The full video explanation is here.
“This is more serious than a case of a player simply having to be responsible for his stick,” said Department of Player Safety Director Brendan Shanahan in the explanation video. “This is a retaliatory high-stick to an opponent that causes an injury.”
Shanahan goes on to mention that Keith asserted it was not his intention to swing with such force or hit Carter in the face, but says that his retaliation was a disproportionate reaction to the exchange from Carter seconds before.
The Department of Player Safety consults the league rule book, the player involved and keeps the offender’s disciplinary history under consideration when making these decisions.
The one-game suspension marks the second instance of supplemental discipline in Keith’s 8-year NHL career.
Chicago faces off against the LA Kings Thursday night at the Staples Center, so Keith will be eligible to play Game 5 in Chicago on Saturday night.
