Chicago Cubs Interested in Pitcher Jonathan Sanchez

According to Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune, the Chicago Cubs have interest in pitcher Jonathan Sanchez. The Cubs are one of several teams to have interest in Sanchez. The Cubs see Sanchez as a relief pitcher that could help boost their bullpen.

The once highly-touted young pitcher has struggled throughout his career.  In his career, Sanchez is 39-58 with a 4.70 earn run average and 796 strikeouts. Sanchez did not pitch in the majors last year and pitched for Triple-A in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization.

The Cubs are pursuing lefty relief pitchers hard this off-season. The Cubs already signed Wesley Wright to a 1-year contract and still have James Russell. The Cubs have also talked to another lefty Clayton Richard.

Sanchez will not cost much and could very well be a minor-league deal with an invite to spring training. If Sanchez does sign a minor-league deal, he would compete with other left-handed relief pitchers Zac Rosscup and Brooks Raley. If anything, Sanchez will hold out for the best contract or best opportunity to play in the majors.
