The Fire announced Wednesday that the team had traded forward Chris Rolfe to D.C. United for allocation money.

Rolfe was originally drafted by the Fire in 2005 and returned to the team in 2012 after a stint with Aalborg BK of the Danish Superliga.

Rolfe’s playing time had been limited since the acquisition of fellow forward Mike Magee during the 2013 season.  “It’s always difficult to part ways with someone who has been part of the club for multiple years,” said Fire Head Coach and Director of Soccer Frank Yallop in a press release.  “But with our existing depth, we felt that this was the right move to make. We thank Chris for his service and wish him all the best in D.C.”

“The allocation money that we received in this trade will give us more flexibility and freedom moving forward,” said Yallop in the press release.  Allocation money can be used to sign players without counting against the salary cap, or to accommodate a player’s salary higher than the league’s maximum salary.

Rolfe will join a deep group of United forwards that already includes Eddie Johnson, Fabian Espindola, Christiano Francois, Michiael Seaton and Conor Doyle.
