Illinois cities expected to bid for IHSA Basketball State Finals

For years the Boys & Girls IHSA State Basketball Championships have been held in Peoria, but that could change come 2016.

The Illinois High School Association announced last week that it will accept bids from Illinois cities to host both the boys and girls tournaments in 2016. The contract would last until 2020.

Peoria is expected to bid again for the tournament as its hosted it since 1996 when it took over from host Champaign.

But Champaign could be in the mix again with upcoming renovations to the State Farm Center. The school has received backing from athletic director Mike Thomas and mens head coach John Groce.

Just a few days ago IHSA’s Kurt Gibson mentioned that he expects Champaign-Urbana, Peoria, Rockford and Chicagoland to bid.

All four cities are very interesting choices for their own ways, but Champaign-Urbana might be the favorite with Peoria close behind.

Rockford has a very close high school basketball following, but it’s location could cost them by not being centralized. The city does have the arena to host the event and provides enough attractions for fans.
