Navy Seal trying out for Northwestern Football
U.S. Navy Seal Tom Hruby is going after what many consider impossible, walking onto the Northwestern Wildcats football team at the age of 32. Tom is a full-time student at Northwestern and wanted to try out last season but wasn’t eligible. He still works his full-time job as a Seal and has a wife and three kids. Tom saved up his leave over the year so he could compete in the three-week camp held by the Wildcats.
“I don’t feel like where I’m at today is some outstanding or amazing thing,” Hruby told the Sun-Times. “It’s just more of a challenging route . . . the way I kind of think about finding and accepting and trying to take on these challenges that most people would probably say are impossible, one, or very unlikely or just plain dumb.”
This will be a very tall task for Hruby but so was Seal school, and he was able to get through that. The mental challenges he will face by trying out for the Cats will be nothing to the challenges he has had to overcome as a Seal. If there is a person who could complete the task of making a Big Ten roster at the age of 32, I would say that person could very well be Hruby.
