Joe Maddon confirms Jon Lester will start Opening Night

Chicago Cubs fans will get their first look at the team’s off-season free agent prize Jon Lester on April 5 vs. the St. Louis Cardinals.

It was likely that Lester would being the Opening Day starter vs. the Cardinals and on Monday, manager Joe Maddon confirmed that Lester will start. Lester has started four Opening Day games in his career with a 1-1 record and a 3.70 ERA in those games.

Jacob Turner and Travis Wood will start the Cubs first Spring Training games on Thursday.

In addition to naming Lester the starter for Opening Night, Maddon also confirmed that Kyle Hendricks will be a part of the rotation according to Patrick Mooney. Hendricks will likely be the #3 or #4 starter in the rotation leaving a competition in training camp for the #5 spot.
