It sounds like Lovie Smith is back in the state of Illinois as a head football coach.
Just minutes after the University of Illinois fired football coach Bill Cubit Saturday, a report surfaced that Smith was the favorite for the job. Yes, that Lovie Smith that coached the Chicago Bears from 2004 to 2012.
The move comes just a few months after Illinois announced it had hired Cubit on a two-year, $2.4M deal as he was serving as interim coach for the season.
CBS 2 Chicago’s Ryan Baker first reported the news:

Smith will be taking over an Illinois program that has gone 17-32 since 2012 and hasn’t had a winning season since 2011. He will try and rebuild what has become a disaster and a bottom feeder in the Big Ten.
An official announcement is expected soon.
