Report: Chicago Cubs still pursuing Sonny Gray

It’s been about 24 hours since the Chicago Cubs acquired starter Jose Quintana from the Chicago White Sox for a package of prospects.

But all signs indicate that the team isn’t done dealing yet.

Jed Hoyer mentioned briefly that the Cubs would like to add a veteran backup catcher after trading Miguel Montero a month ago. Another starter might not hurt either.

According to Fox Sports’ Jon Morosi, the Cubs are pursuing Oakland Athletics starting pitcher Sonny Gray.

Morosi notes the reasoning in the above tweet and it makes sense.

Both Jake Arrieta and John Lackey are set to hit free agency after this season, leaving two holes in the Cubs rotation even after acquiring Quintana.

The Cubs have been linked to Gray before but they aren’t the only team. The 27-year-old Gray has drawn interest from several teams, most recently the Minnesota Twins and Houston Astros.

Gray is 4-4 with a 4.00 ERA in 13 starts for the Athletics this season.

Chicago parted ways with top prospect Eloy Jimenez and pitcher Dylan Cease, so a deal might involve a big league talent.
