Albert Breer The Bears and RB Matt Forte will open contract talks in Indianapolis, per a league source.

Though he ain't no Armando Allen, he's still good

Here's what I think is a reasonable approach to our WR situation...

WR # 1 Robert Meacham – Sign the 27 year old, 5 year vet. He's fast, big target. Has caught 40 or more passes in each of last three seasons. Could easily catch an additional 30 balls w Bears. his previous team, Saints, had so many weapons he wasn't targeted very often
WR #2 Earl Bennett – Move him up the depth chart... Would provide Cutler with a familiar target. Reliable hands & route-runner.
WR #3 Tommy Streeter, Draft the University of Miami 6 foot 4 215-pounder. He has long arms, big hands and can create mismatches in the red zone. He will go get the football even when covered up. Might drop to round three, but more likely will need to be nabbed in round two
WR #4 Devin Hester – Getting Hester around 40 touches on multi-WR sets translates to EXPLOSIVE OFFENSE
WR # 5 – Dane Sanzenbacher – The kid is a poor man’s version of Wes Welker. Good hands. His 27 catches in his rookie season is a good foundation for becoming a dependable safety valve

On the TE front, I would bring back last year’s edition unless there’s an opportunity to bring in Redskins TE Fred Davis.

The thought of drafting a Tight End five years after drafting Greg Olsen, who is moving into his prime, sickens me!

Brad Briggs just tweeted:

#Bears among bottom 5 teams in NFL in cash spending in 2011, joining TB, CLE, JAX & MIA per @ProStarSports. None of 5 had winning record.

I think the new CBA mandates that all teams spend all of their cap money. Hopefully, this won't be an issue anymore.

I like Meacham, but he isn't a #1 target. He'd be a great complimentary piece, but if what you're suggesting was what the Bears ended up doing in the offseason, we still would only have two viable weapons on offense -- Matt Forte and Jay Cutler. Cutler needs to have a guy he can count on in any situation to make a huge catch, break a tackle, run the perfect route and get open. Meacham isn't that guy.

My suggestion is that Meacham could be a serviceable #1 until Streeter (or another 2nd round WR pickup) develops into #1.

Yes, Meacham has not been a #1. He's been a 3rd or 4th option for the Saints. But, I'm projecting that he can develop into a decent weapon for Cutler.

Here's my overall concern, the Bears D is getting OLD.
Urlacher 33
Briggs - 31
Peppers - 32
Tillam - 31

The Bears need to find a young linebacker so they can begin the transformation of Briggs/Urlacher to whomever. Tillman has another year or two as a top CB. The other CB slot is vacant.

Plus, the team needs a pass rusher - desperately.

Spending too many of the team's resources on WRs could be a mistake.

Find a free agent who has upside (Meacham or Mario Manningham) and develop a Streeter or a Rueben Randle from LSU.

‏ @BradBiggs

Also, #Bears chairman George McCaskey arrived at combine today to learn more about process, surely will sit in on player interviews, more.
