with committed contracts and arb eligible players you are looking at 125 million already on the books next year. there is no high priced cub on this team that another club will just take on.

Using Toews and Keith in a debate to defend Stalberg....priceless.

That said, Dunn will command more than that, but to think the Cubs brass wouldn't pay it is just ludicrous if you've ever followed the team.
im talking about moving forward, not what hendrys open pocket did in the past.

I'd be willing to bet someone would take Fukudome and Z, even if we pay half their contracts, that's still like 15 million off the books. Enough to sign a Dunn.

sure, so does that make you a contender? no bullpen, and a half ass starting rotation.

?at 3b ?lf, colvin everyday....will he be good or bust....i mean cmon

dont you want to win the world series? zambrano, demp, wells, silva, (gorzo) how is that going to work out for ya?

they are going to be in rebuilding mode.

How can Z be in the rotation if he's traded?

Demp, Gorz, Wells, Silva, Cashner is a rotation I can live with. Although I do think we will go out and sign a Brandon Webb type. Medium risk/High reward guy.

The fact of the matter is that the Ricketts can't afford to rebuild. They are already under a lot of heat because of this year. Which is ludicrous, considering they have had the team for like a year now. But, the average fan is the demographic that they are shooting for. They need to win those fans over now, considering all the money they have had to borrow.

With Dunn and another pitcher, I think that we can contend in the NL central. Do I think we can win the WS? No. But, it is a step in the right direction. Ultimately, I think our window for the WS opens in maybe 2012, definitely 2013.

Nobody is going take half of Z's deal. You're going to pay it in full or you're going to have Zambrano.

I think if the Cubs pay 7M of Kosuke, he will be dealt. I think if the Cubs pay 75% of Z, he could be gone. It also depends on how he finishes out the season. That will determine if his stock is high or low and how much the Cubs would have to eat.

So in your scenario the Cubs end up spending $33 million to get rid of two players.

How exactly does that make it easier for them to go after free agents?

Hell, even at $9 million I find it hard to believe a team is going to want to take Zambrano.

Are you kidding me? At $9mill that is a steal for a pitcher of Zambrano's talent. The only thing that keeps Z from being a perrenial Cy Young canidate is his head. We've all seen glimpses of when it's on straight & what he can do with the ball. I'm willing to bet almost half the GM's in baseball would be willing to take on the risk at that price, when the reward would be extremely high. And I'm including your boy K-Dubs in that list.
