We've all seen glimpses of when it's on straight & what he can do with the ball. Paying half of the money owed to both Fukudome and Zambrano is more than likely the low end of what the Cubs would have to pay to send the two of them off. That would make for a $63.5 million payroll for FIVE players in 2012, with all standing options for that season bought out. If those options are picked up, that's $87.5 million for seven guys. That's atrocious.

I realize that the money is there. But really, it's not THAT bad. Look at the Cardinals, they are basically buttfucking themselves, should they sign Alberto. Then they will have ~55 MM in 3 players, not including Wainwright. It's really not that bad.

As for Dunn, there is no way he gets 17 million in his first year. No way. While I think that people who think he will get a slight 1 million dollar raise from his 10 million are low balling it, I think they are closer than your 17 million dollar min. figure. The fact that he strikes out a ton, will hurt him, although it shouldn't, it will.
