Default Kerry Wood Thread

Kerry Wood Expected to Return |

Quote:
According to the Chicago Tribune, pitcher Kerry Wood is expected to resign with the Chicago Cubs. As a player and not a coach. We heard a few weeks back that Wood will probably return to the Cubs as a player or a coach. Now we know it will be as a player and to keep the bullpen strong and in check. The Tribune states the Cubs and Wood have began talking and he will return.

Kerry Wood re-sign with the Cubs before the 2011 season on a 1 year, 1.5 million contract. Wood was gone for 2 years after the Cubs decided not to resign him. All Wood wanted was to play for the Cubs and finish his career on the North Side. Wood pitched pretty good in ’11…Wood had a era of 3.35 with 57 strikeouts and 21 walks in 51 innings.

Wood was eventually shut down on September 20th with a knee injury. Wood got arthroscopic surgery when the 2011 season concluded and it was a success. Wood should be ready for the start of the 2012 season.

Also, back in September Wood said he’ll retire if he does not resign with the Cubs. That’s a guy who has the Cubs in his heart. I don’t know how the contract would look, but will probably favor the Cubs. We could see a contract very similar, but won’t know ’till the deal is done. That could be soon now.

And we can keep around long enough to be a coach when his playing career is over.

Given his motion, not sure he would be a good coach

Is it his throwing motion or that he was overused when he was in HS? I've heard his HS coach put a lot of wear and tear on his arm.

I think it is a bit of both. He was used and abused at many levels in baseball. The story I recall is that Wood pitched both ends of a double header in high school. I don't know if that is true or not, but he was definitely used more than he should have been at that age. He also racked up a lot of wear as a starter under Riggs and Baker. His arm motion certainly was a contributing factor, but to say it is one or the other is impossible to prove at this point.

Contract news is slim to none, but looks like Kerry Wood will stick around at least for the Convention and some charity stuff:
