The problem is that to get talent you have to give up talent in the first place. [/B] I would love to be able to move Marmol to get this kind of package or Zambrano or Dempster. Unforunately none of those guys have close to the value of Garza.
what about trading pena, marmol, and another piece?

san diego lacks serious power hitters..and pena would fit the 1B void..only issue is he doesnt have alot of value

Maybe they should sign Tim Tebow to pitch.

Carlos Pena is a free agent right now. The Padres just traded for Alonso who can only play 1st, which is the only reason Anthony Rizzo is available right now. The Padres have no reason to trade Rizzo unless they are getting something of a high caliber back. That is really why Garza makes a lot of sense.

i just hate the trade because it kills our pitching for a good while

I like Orlando Hudson as well as a guy with a solid glove at 2B and a little speed. However, the Cubs ought to get a lot more than Hudson and Rizzo for Garza. The Padres would give you Orlando Hudson since he is due 5.5 million next year and has a 2 million dollar buyout of an 8 million club option. The Padres want to trade Hudson's 7 million to offset the likely 8 million Garza is going to get in a deal.

How about Headley, Rizzo, Hudson and another prospect for Garza and Marmol.

I doubt the Padres would have interest in Pena, even if the Cubs could trade him, since they got Alonso though. I understand not wanting to part with a quality starter that is under 30 and under team control for 2 more seasons. Unforunately those very things we like about him is what is going to allow us to get a guy like Rizzo and more back. If the Cubs can get another arm that profiles as a top of the rotation guy along with a middle of the order bat in Rizzo, that is a deal to you have to think long and hard about making.

I've seen that idea floated in a few places, but the only thing that I've read implied that Headley's name hadn't come up in a deal. I am guessing that having Ian Stewart combined with the price tag on Headley makes it unlikely.

Hudson is minimally better than Barney and like 8 years older. His age and contract sound more like a burden than an asset in comparison.

this is the crucial part...i wouldnt make that deal unless you know that you can get pitching in return from the padres or you have a FA or trade in mind to get some
