Chicago White Sox Wood Almost Was A South Sider?

My apologies if this has already been discussed. But I found this article interesting...

White Sox were close to landing Wood

I wouldn't have been surprised. His family being settled in Chicago was important to Kerry Wood so if he still wanted to play, the only logical option was the White Sox.

I never understood the love for Kerry Wood. The video below isnt the actual video that was played on 670. but when they announced they resigned wood the place went up for grabs, the guys on the score were baffled.

on a side note* there was no point on trying to sign him.

There was no point in the Cubs signing Wood either. Just to appease the fans more or less.

There is no reason to sign a still effective reliever for at worst a market value contract? I get that we are rebuilding and Wood is old. But he has value and his contract is extremely team friendly still. And there is value in having a guy who has been there when our bullpen is completely filled with guys with a year or less of major league experience (assuming Shark is pushed into the rotation and Marmol is eventually dealt).

Not really, when the Cubs are reloading.

It was to save face, and appease fans signing Wood, more than it was for signing Wood because he's good at baseball.

Even if I accept your premise it doesn't change the fact the Cubs got a player that is still good at baseball at a very reasonable rate which is a good thing no matter what.

I'm not saying it's a bad move, I'm saying the Cubs signed Wood to appease the fans more than that Wood is good at baseball.

You said there was no point as well. That is not true. I agree that if his name wasn't Kerry Wood, he probably doesn't get signed. But if he wasn't Kerry Wood, he wouldn't have taken that deal to be with the Cubs this year or last year. It works both ways.

No point, to me, is not equal to saying bad move.

A bad move to me, was signing Milton Bradley.

This just didn't make much sense outside of pleasing the fans.

It's a move I believe Theo had to make, before a majority of the fan base went rabid.
