I don't believe the 150k toward education costs the cubs anything in terms of bonus pool. They still have roughly $700k more than the slot value of the 2 pick they can use without penalty.

Edit: FWIW this is basically 3rd round money which is some what encouraging. Means he should be some what decent.

This guy was one I was pretty sure they'd sign but was still happy to see. BA had him as the #219th best player. Good stuff but lacked control. Only othe r guy still unsigned that I *really* care about is Mitchell Parker. But I'm guessing they have the money else we would already know. Chances are they are waiting on Roederer and Andy Weber's deals to finish to make sure they have the money.

They are down to $583,955 left before penalty after that pick. Just based on the way they've slotted guys similar to Andy weber I'm guessing he probably gets at least $200k. Not sure whether or not that is going to effect Parker. The nice thing is even if they only have $300k to offer it's actually $425k because $125k doesn't count. And $425k is basically the slot money for their 4th round pick.

11th-rder Riley Thompson signs w/@Cubs for $200k ($75k counts vs pool). Louisville RHP, redshirt sophomore, has reached 100 mph with fastball & can also flash plus curveball but also has TJ surgery in past & has been inconsistent. Intriguing arm. @MLBDraft

Beck bullpen arm, or possible rotation guy

My initial thought was bullpen arm but he started for Louisville in the ACC which is a pretty good conference. I think they may do what they've done with several 11th round picks lately like Rollie Lacy and Micheal Rucker which is start them in the bullpen and if they prove they are good enough you let them start.

We're on the eve of draft pick deadline. Of the cubs top 25 picks only Layne Looney(19th round out of richmond) is uncommitted with Hunter Taylor out of south caralonia having indicated he may sign but hasn't yet. Everyone else is signed. Of the rest 26th and 27th round picks Julian Boyd and Niels Stone are uncommitted either way as is 35th round pick Edmond Americaan. 28th round pick Mitchell Parker looks like he wont sign as does 33rd round pick Tyler Ras, and all 36-40(Jacob Campbell, Anthony Vilar, Chase Hanson and the last 2 guys who i don't think were even really "prospects" but rather feel good stories in Pierson Gibis and Itamar Steiner).

In theory the cubs still have about $80k slot money they can spend but Weber didn't come in as cheap as I thought and was actually over slot. So, some of the uncommitted guys may still sign. My guess is they have offers to these guys and when a guy like Parker finally shuts them down you might have more money to push other guys.

This may be my last post on all this given we're basically done. But for those curious, money is generally the best way to see how teams view talent rather than how they were picked. So, these are how the cubs stack their draft

1st round Nico Hoerner - $2,724,000
2nd round comp pick 1 Cole Roederer - $1,200,000
2nd round Brennen Davis - $1,100,000
6th round Kohl Franklin - $540,000
3rd round Jimmy Herron - $520,000
2nd round comp pick 2 Paul Richan - $450,000
5th round Andy Weber - $400,000
7th round DJ Artis - $250,000
11th round Riley Thompson - $200,000
20th round Chris Allen - $150,000
8th round Zach Mort - $140,000
4th round Ethan Roberts - $130,000
9th round Derek Casey - $130,000
10th round Luke Reynolds - $125,000
12th round Cameron Sanders - $125,000
13th round Ezequiel Pagan - $125,000
14th round Riley McCauley - $125,000
16th round Josh Sawyer - $125,000
15th round Tyler Durna - $100,000
18th round Jake Slaughter - $100,000
34th round Miguel Pabon - $50,000
21st round Carlos Vega - $5,000
32nd round Jack Patterson - $5,000
22nd round Jamie Galazin - $3,000
24th round Blake Whitney - $3,000
25th round Dalton Hurd - $3,000
29th round Levi Jordan - $3,000
30th round Drew Wharton - $3,000
31st round Clayton Daniel - $1,000

Signed but unsure bonus
17th round Jake Reindl - unknown

Remaining unsigned players(picks 19, 23, 26, 27, 28, 33, 35-40)
Layne Looney, Hunter Taylor(likely to sign), Julian Boyd, Niels Stone, Mitchell Parker, Tyler Ras, Edmond Americaan, Jacob Campbell, Anthony Vilar, Chase Hanson, Pierson Gibis, Itamar Steiner

35th-rder Edmond Americaan agrees w/@Cubs on $208,500 bonus ($83,500 counts vs slot). Chipola (Fla.) JC OF, plus speed is best tool & plays on bases and in CF, line-drive/contact bat. Florida International recruit. @MLBDraft

9:41 AM - Jul 6, 2018

That accounts for the rest of their slot money. They can't offer anyone else more than $125k
