I'm working on kind of a long article on roster construction and how successful teams build. It has a Cubs focus and what we can expect/look for the Cubs to do over the next few years.

Here is a graphic that will be featured in the article detailing the different approaches each team uses:

It details the WAR contributions each type of acquisition made for their respective teams. I split them into 5 types:
  • Drafted WAR - Players acquired via the June Draft
  • Traded WAR - Players acquired via trade
  • Free Agent WAR - Free Agents
  • Am. Free Agent WAR - This is a wider net, hits guys who weren't drafted for one reason or another
  • Other WAR - Rule 5, Waivers, Purchased contracts, (Yu Darvish) etc. etc.

Notes:
I used WAR because it's easy to use WAR, I'm familiar with WAR, and it illustrates in a much more elegant manner than any other alternatives.
I have thoughts but I'll save those. Content to just share for now.

That is an awesome chart. Now I don't want to write anything because I can't compete with those graphics.

You can write without awesome graphics as long as the story doesn't suck :D

If there was a chart that charted my anger while making this chart it would be all off the charts. My anger I mean, not the chart.

Trust me, you're better off without the graphics.

For some reason the Tigers war values are flipped. Am. Free Agent and Traded War should be reversed. I'll fix that for the final graphs.

Aight.

So I have a lot of time until opening day, what I'm doing (there will be a White Sox one as well), is going back and first: charting the Cubs opening day starter by WAR in the season they were the Opening Day starter, and 2. Listing and charting all other pitchers that made 20 starts.

It's a big project, I'll try and go back until 1992, but it's for the funs and stuff.

Also WSD has a new font.

We are looking at Jeff Samardzija and his weird June...

He's a preview of some of the graphics I'm working on for this story.
