Honestly it's mostly just buying out his rookie deal and setting in stone his arb prices with 2 team friendly options at the end should they choose to keep him. Then it’s not that bad. It does make me wonder where Happ fits in now. I think it’s time to move Happ for some pitching

Probably their plan the whole time , and why they sent him down so he can get regular ABsThen it’s not that bad. It does make me wonder where Happ fits in now. I think it’s time to move Happ for some pitching
True, but if you're the FO there's no reason to make this deal unless you think there's something there, right? If you think he's just a AAAA player, you let him play out his arbitration, which is a team-friendly process as it is.
Yeah I mean to me it suggests they think he's a starter caliber player. If he's just a bench bat I don't think you do this.True, but if you're the FO there's no reason to make this deal unless you think there's something there, right? I'm not saying it's a lot of money. I'm saying you don't tie yourself down to role players for 4-5 years. For example, they didn't do this with Szczur.15 mil is peanuts even for a utility guy. If he turns out to be every day then they pick up the opts. I don't see them spending 7M on a utility.

Again, of those 27 players are any of them role players? I mean i guess it depends on what you're defining as a role player but my point was more that if Bote isn't the 8th best hitter the cubs have then they think he's 9 or 10 and will play him for 400-500 PAs a season. You don't extend a guy like this if you're only planning on him getting 200 PAs.I'm thinking that it was more about gaining control over the future. What is it 27 players have signed these deals sense Jan. So if Tom shows a willingness to extend with Kyle and David then the real targets will know that they can start talking because the door is open now.
