As I impatiently wait for the game to start I was browsing through stats as I'm prone to do. To cut to the chase here, I'm getting really excited about Brennen Davis. I think he may actually be a better prospect than Hoerner. In a league that's 2 years older on average than him he's hitting .347/.439/.551(12.3%/14.0% bb/k rate and 183 wRC+) over his 57 PAs. For some added context here, Roederer was supposedly the more polished hitter who started the year in South Bend. He's the same age and he's hitting .224/.292/.343(9.3%/26.1% with a 83 wRC+). And the thing is, that's not even crazy BABIP luck.
For some more context here, Jarred Kelenic was the first high schooler taken in the 2018 draft #6 overall. He's not as tooled up as Davis. Davis was 40/60/60/55/60 for hit/raw power/run/field/arm while Kelenic was 60/55/50/50/60. He started the year in the South Atlantic league which is roughly equivalent competition to south bend and hit really well(.309/.394/.586 11.5%/20.6% with a 180 wRC+) so much so that after 218 PAs the M's promoted him to A+.
Point here being, for a guy who's biggest flaw was supposed to be hitting, Davis is hitting at a similar rate to a guy who was one of the better rated hitters in the same draft class. If this is indeed real and nothing statistically stands out to me as to why it wouldn't be real then the cubs may have drafted a top 5 type talent in the back of the second round. His upside is frankly pretty staggering. 60 grades on power/speed roughly equates to 30/30 for homers/stolen bases. A 60 run grade with a 60 arm probably makes him a legitimate gold glove type outfielder. That's like Mookie Betts who coincidentally was drafted in the 5th round by portions of this current front office.
Just figured this is something people should be aware of. That's not throwing shade at Hoerner or Roederer for that matter who I think will be good. But if Davis continues to hit he's easily the best prospect in the cubs system and maybe one of the top in all of baseball.
