Stephen Denmark/CB Valdosta State – 6’3”, 220 lbs

The Good

  • Unreal athleticism and physical attributes
  • Great press man corner, uses length extremely well
  • Extremely fluid for his size, click and close is efficient
  • Plays well to his leverage and assignments
  • Flashes ball skills, can high point the ball and has natural hands
  • Disrupts the catch point with ferociousness
  • Tenacious run defender who will stick his nose in the run game and do it well
  • Lays the wood and plays with physicality
  • Sound tackler, wraps up well
The Bad

  • Raw processor in zone, can get caught looking into the backfield at times
  • Has athleticism to use trail technique, but does not effectively use angles well enough
  • Can have mirroring trouble, doesn’t keep hips disciplined
  • Needs to improve recognition and anticipation of routes
  • Has to learn to work through trash better, can get sifted out through mesh concepts
  • Lack of versatility, never worked out of slot
  • Low level of competition

I watched a video of him jumping off a highdive platform. Took awhile to realize the video was playing backwards and he was actually jumping out of the pool up onto it!

He is a nasty tackler but weighs only 216 pounds. I was thinking that he would be a better ILBer but he is just too light. He needs a ton of work as a CB. His athletic ability and tackling would be real interesting as an ILBer including a little bit of coverage for TEs, but that weight ...

If you haven't seen him unleash his inner "The Blind Side", you should watch the video below at the 0.30 mark. I can just picture Pace and Nagy laughing while watching that part, just like in The Blind Side.

The more I watch his video, the more I want him to move to safety. He is super aware and a big hitter.

Definitely has the ability to control tiny speedsters at the LOS and warp their route tree before Jackson or HaHa need to worry about them. Great physicality.

Also, Pagano has to be salivating at the possibilty to bring him on an occasional 2nd/3rd down from a heavy nickel

He stands out on tape that’s for sure. A year on the PS and he could turn out to be a an absolute stud! He is fast, physical, and seems to have a ‘nasty’ streak and wants contact. I like the upside.

And here is where fans overvalue draft picks. He is a 7th rounder and the odds are against him.

It will be a victory for him to make the team for an extended period of time let alone win a starting position.

I liked this for a 7th round pick. Get the specimen you don't want to risk losing as a UDFA. I'm all for projects and small school players in the last 2 rounds. I think Whyte was also a fine choice but suspect he's a one trick pony and won't be as valuable as Denmark will eventually be, is at all.

He's being groomed to take over for Danny Trevathan who will be cut after this year.
