Dejan Stankovic (Inter) and Nemanja Vidic (Manchester United) are retiring from International Football after Serbia failed to qualify for Euro 2012

Serbia captain Dejan Stankovic said he is retiring from international football at the age of 33 following his country's failure to reach the UEFA EURO 2012 finals.

Sportski Zurnal quoted the Inter Milan midfielder as saying last night's 1-0 loss to Slovenia heralded the end of the road for him.

"For me it was my last competitive match for the national side. I'll still have a farewell match, but then it's goodbye," the newspaper quoted the veteran as saying.

Stankovic made his debut in 1998 in a 3-1 win over Korea Republic in Belgrade and has won 102 caps, a joint national record with former striker Savo Milosevic. He also netted 15 goals.

Manchester United centre-back Nemanja Vidic - who had a penalty saved against Slovenia - is also thinking of retiring from the national side at the age of 30, judging by his remarks after the match.

"It is time to bring on younger players in the national side - some of the old-stagers should retire from the team," said Vidic, who made his debut in 2002 in a 1-1 draw with Italy and has won 56 caps.

we have alot of youngins, and we wont have anything but friendlies until next august (world cup qualifying starts), so yea its a good time to go

stankovic will probably be our coach once he retires fully from football

So, Serbia wasn't good enough to make Euro, and now lost 2 of their best players?

Serbia has been living off their 2006 World Cup team for the past several years, with old players eventually retiring and no one replacing them. The 2010 World Cup team was a disgrace, but at least they qualified. The younger players haven't really stepped up.

Yes we have.

We only beat Germany in the world cup because the ref was dumb and kicked Klose out.

We were in one of the easiest Euro qualifying groups and we failed...

We have some young ones coming up though ( Sulejmani) that should help
