There was a rumor by Hector Gomez that Eloy and the White Sox were close to an extension. Here is Rosenthal's take.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet" data-lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">The report of the <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/WhiteSox?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#WhiteSox</a> and Eloy being close on 8-year, $100M deal is both inaccurate and unrealistic. Scott Kingery signed largest contract for a player who had yet to appear in majors - 6 yrs, $24M with 3 club options. Only other such deal: Jonathan Singleton (5 yrs, $10M).</p>— Ken Rosenthal (@Ken_Rosenthal) <a href="https://twitter.com/Ken_Rosenthal/status/1106573666207313921?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">March 15, 2019</a></blockquote>

UPDATED: White Sox and Jimenez agree on long-term deal

The only reason I can see to do this is cause they know if he becomes good they won’t pay up market rates.

Wow. That's a great deal for the White Sox.

I am still against paying a kid without him playing a moment of ball. That said, we have such payroll flexibility at this point we can easily absorb if Eloy busts out.

True but the cost of it was worth it for them. Great deal.

They are terrified by the salary explosion. Taking these chances are the only way to keep talent away from the big spending 10 teams

If they do this again, they are going to hurt the franchise pretty bad. Nothing wrong with seeing a year or two of ball.

Isn't this slightly premature? Buddy hasn't played one game of big league ball.

It'll either be a genius move if he blows up or incredibly stupid.

Well, that's the thing. It looks like Eloy is going to be legit. It's a gamble, sure but if Eloy turns out to be one of the top 10 players or so, this is great value.

Agree, but not costly to the roster as it comes to finances. Plus Eloy starts opening day I would assume

Yeah, he's gotta be up Opening Day after this. Service time won't be an issue.

If he ends up elite you got an elite player at a major discount

If he ends up a bum big deal it’s not like the deal will prevent us from getting tier one players cause we aren’t capable of those moves anyways

So if he’s elite after 4 years you can trade him for another haul of prospects

And as Brett said we have a pretty low cap right now can’t hurt us either way

Bingo.

It's a good move.
