It’s a nice pay raise for Massie, 29, who just completed an $18 million, three-year contract. When you boil down the fine details of the contract, it’s essentially a $15.8 million, two-year contract. At that point, the Bears can make decisions on a yearly basis with no remaining money guaranteed.

RT Bobby Massie
Overview: $40 million, five-year contract, $15.8 million guaranteed

2019: $2.4 million base salary, $6.5 million signing bonus, $100,000 workout bonus

Total: $3.8 million

Cap hit: $3.8 million

Note: Signing bonus and base salary are fully guaranteed.

2020: $6.9 million base salary, $100,000 workout bonus

Total: $7 million

Cap hit: $8.3 million

He took a structure that helps the Bears.

5 years helps the Bears move money around if needed.

So the cap hit of 3.8M in 2019 gives us a little more room than expected?

Yes. I thought we would resign him for like $5M-$8M so this helps open up some extra room. With Simms gone and hopefully a Long restructure we can have some actual cap space to play around with.

I calculated it out to mean that they have 16.5 million for re-signings and free agency. They can generate an easy 8 million with Mack if they want to.

I think bringing one of Callahan and Amos back is more realistic with the Massie money.

Windy, would you take a moment to explain the 101 financial razzle-dazzle the NFL does here for the layman?

Why is the 2019 cap hit only $3.8 million when they are actually giving Massie $9 million in 2019 ($2.4 base salary, $6.5 signing bonus, $100,000 workout bonus)?

Watch Amos AND Callahan structure their contracts to help the BEARs with guarantees still preserved but with a different timeline that is beneficial to the team

The signing bonus is prorated as far as the cap number is concerned. So only 25% of it goes for 2019.

5 year contract, so prorated over 5 years. 6.5m/5 = 1.3m per season. I'm sure your mistake was accidental, but for others to fully understand...

Note: the signing bonus is the only money prorated like that. Any other bonuses or escalators affect the cap year they are paid in.

Love this contract, hope we can get out of it in year 3 or 4 with minimum dead money. Shows me Massie wanted to stay and play with a winner. Hope Amos or Callahan feel the same. If we bring one of the DBs back with Massie, I am happy with the offseason.

Since Callahan's injury - what is his going rate?

you just did...

Rob, you're about as edgy as river rocks. Now go back to the kids table and eat your playdoh and boogers like a good little boy.
