Even if he performed relatively well, it still doesn't really do much for this year's team.

Sure it does. It keeps the younger (non-mlb) pitchers on track and not rushed. That's massive by itself.

LOL, like they are going rush minor leaguers this year when they again have 1% chance to compete for the playoffs. Not that I'm complaining about the rebuild - I'm not.

Even if that's the case, and I don' think it is, who cares if it's Santana or some other warm body who won't be here in a couple years? No risk, low reward. I'm not against the move per se, just doesn't really matter.
