Ryan Dempster is deferring 3 million of his 2010 salary at little/no interest. This will create some flexibility for the front office to make a move or two at the deadline.

Wow, talk about a team player!

Hopefully Soriano, Ramirez, Lee and Zambrano follow suit.

That's not entirely accurate, WC. He's deferring $3M at little/no interest, but he's still receiving it all. Still a solid move tho.

100% right. I was in a hurry to post this. Either way, that is pretty cool of him.

Nice. I've always liked the way Demp handles himself off the field.

Hopefully this means that this gives the Cubs more flexibility to get a reliever

Don't forget that Dempster's contract is escalating in salary, so doing this might actually hurt the Cubs down the road, because now in 2011 or 2012 they'll be paying even more for the same number of players. Yeah, it's cool that he wants to help, but there is a downside to this.

Doesn't look like it's gonna help the Cubs now at all anyway.

Ken Rosenthal just tweeted this:- Correction: Dempster deferral occurred in off-season, as reported by ESPN.com. Created flexibility for #Cubs to sign Nady.

Yes. It's been confirmed that the deferral of money was so the Cubs could sign Nady.

Demp still is a stand up guy, but they used that money to sign Nady? It's no secret here that I'm not the biggest fan of the X-man, but this only makes me not like him even more haha.

This is great! Finally someone who can really be called a team player. Obviously winning is more important to Dempster than money. I wish more players were more like that
