I wouldn't be opposed to him. Our production out of 2B is terrible, but Johnson would be a stopgap guy.

I understand what your saying Dab. this just popped in my head. Even contending teams have stopgap guys. Cant have 8 all stars everywhere. How many positions do you think Cubs need to make sure that guy is not stopgap?

It depends on what Rizzo and Jackson are at the big league level. If Rizzo is truly a middle of the order bat then it makes it a little easier. Johnson's production out 2B is actually really good most years, but the issue is that he is 30 now. How many peak years does he have left? That is why I termed him a stopgap.

Makes sense.. I dont see him as long term either. So im assuming Cubs are planning on Castro, Rizzo, and Jackson long term. How many other longterm guys do you think Cubs need before they start going for it?

Again it depends on what those guys are at their best. If Castro is a .750 OPS guy then it probably takes more. If he is an .800-.850 guy less. Same with Jackson and Rizzo, with Rizzo having the much higher offensive ceiling. Kelly Johnson would be a smart pickup if this team was thinking they could be competitive quickly. I don't know if Theo/Jed feel that way or not.

Stop gap???? I guess you have said that about every single player for the past 103 years

KJ has five years at least IMO.

Read the rest of the thread and I explain why I call him a stopgap. It isn't due to his production, but rather the fact that you can really expect what 2-4 more years of that level of production.

I think he'll be above average all five years. That's more than a stop gap

Give me a team of above average players and I'll show you a team that needs their moms to cut their steak from the weight of the rings on their fingers

It is possible, but it is also possible that he will begin to decline in 2 years. Counting on a guy at those seasons to continue to produce is a bad idea for a team that is likely to only begin to be competitive in that timeframe.
