My apologies, allow me to re-phrase. It is very difficult for me to take your opinions as fact, when I see nothing on this film that would lead me to believe he was better than Payton ...other than pure speed. I also see a LOT of open field for Sayers, while Payton was his own OL by necessity early on.

For one game I would take Sayers, for a career I would take Payton.
I saw some of Payton, when he was older. But I will say this. I don't think Payton gets into the HOF off of his first 68 games....
In all fairness, Sayers probably had it worse that Walter did. His first season, with Gale and Butkus coming in together(how's that for a 1st round) they went 9-5 and were just edged out the last week for a playoff spot. After that it was all down hill, including the worst season Ive ever seen the Bears have, 1-13 in 1969. Typical Bears offensive woes, no QB....Bears QB's checking in regularly with ratings in the 50 range all thru Sayers run along with a mediocre OL. Remember what your looking at is highlites, they're not filming the bunch of times where he gets hammered into the turf or somene busts in untouched. He would get out there in the open because of his moves....like the amazing ability to cut without slowing down. Still, given all that...he did have an advantage that Walter never had, he was probably the fastest player in the league, combine that with his incredible moves...well, once he hit open space he was usually gone.
That being said...I still cant rate him higher than Walter. They both were so damn good. I still say for one game...Sayers. One season...Payton.
