Who was better? Obviously Sweetness had the longer career & gets a lot more recognition (which he deserves), but I feel that Gale Sayers is often overlooked when talking about elite RB.
So, who was better?
Sweetness.

Honestly there is no debate who better. Payton with ease
walter payton
Walter Payton was better than Sayers at nearly everything except kick/punt returns.
Payton. 85 Bears for life![]()
Didn't watch Sayers play, so I'm not going to act like I know shit. I did see a good chuck of Walter's though, thems' was good times.

I only saw Walter. That said anyone that has seen them both votes Sayers. So I voted that way

You saw Walter and voted opposite...hmm...ok. Sayers couldn't block, couldn't throw, and certainly could not play QB. Before they fucked-up all the rules, a complete RB had more value than most QB's. And the durability issue, Sayers may have burned bright...but the candle went out quick.

Payton. Dude could do it all. I love Sayers. But he wasn't a complete player
Sweetness. I may not have gotten to witness Sayers, but the fact remains Payton was a complete back and our whole damn Offensive for many years. Plus, just watching his unique style and skill is unforgettable.
Walter Payton isn't just the greatest running back ever, he's one of the greatest football players ever. His ability and passion transcended the running back position. As great as Gayle Sayers was, I don't even think this is a debate.
Never die easy.
I don't have to ask anyone, that's what film is for. Did your relatives play the game?. Mine sure didn't, so why would I allow someone else to form my opinions?.
And Sayers is somewhat the opposite of Payton. Walter was a humble man, Sayers was and still is full of pride.
Now you have a Biblical reason to change your mind...lol

Saying Sayers was not complete and also using qb skills is insane
I asked a few more today. It was unanimous
For one game, Sayers. For a career, Payton

I was actually lucky enough to see them both play live, Sayers at Wrigley Field and Walter at Soldiers Field. Its really a tough call.
Walter was far more durable and could do more...I always thought he could have played a few different positions. He could've been a great saftey. He made some of the greatest runs Ive ever seen...strength, that great initial burst, that devasting straight arm and absolute refusal to go down.
But Sayers was the most elusive back Ive ever seen and at the time he played there was no one in the league that could tackle him one on one if he got into the open field....plus the fact that he was never caught from behind before the knee injury.
I cant choose between them. I will say this....for one game its Gale. For one season...its Walter.
Did your parents convince you of this while making reservations at White Castle?.
The all-time RB lists have been thoroughly discussed here(and everywhere else). You would be very, very hard-pressed to find any with Sayers ahead of Payton...some don't even consider Sayers top 10 all-time.
