Well the fact that this matchup might not even happen makes it a little odd to be discussing it, but what the hell.

    HAWKS WILL WIN

If Phoenix wins, we get them. If they lose, we get the winner of the SJ-LA game.

But we can beat any of those three teams no? Good deal for the Hawks IMO.

    From Coyotes blogger Adam French:

The options are as such. If they win they play the Black Hawks in the first round. A team they have for the most part beaten and controlled. Their styles match up very well in the Coyotes favour as the neutral zone stoppage really disrupts Chicago. Crawford is also one of the weakest goalies in the playoffs, anything can happen in the playoffs it is true, but Smith has had the game winning touch all year long and Crawford has struggled on a talented team. I also feel the Coyotes are much more physical than the Hawks and could gain the edge there. The Hawks have the better forwards, but I think they lack the overall depth to be considered a ‘favourite,’ if I were Dave Tippett I wish to face them.

Default Chicago Blackhawks - Phoenix Coyotes 1st Round Discussion

The Hawks got the matchup I was hoping the Wings would get. Phoenix is a much easier opponent than Nashville. The Wings players and coaches are glad they don't have the travel associated with Phoenix, but with their own plane I don't think that should matter.

If Chicago plays up to their talent and the goaltending doesn't implode, I don't see the series going any longer than six with five more likely.

I can see why, nobody wants to play Nashville. In some respects, I was hoping it would be the Hawks. If we have to face them anyways, mine as well be sooner than later. On the flipside, any team can go down if they run into an opposing hot goalie. So there's always a chance we won't see them at all.

NHL playoffs: Underdogs, upsets & first-round predictions - NHL - Yahoo! Sports

    3. Phoenix Coyotes vs. 6. Chicago Blackhawks

Why the underdog can win: The Blackhawks were four points better than the Coyotes during the regular season – while playing in a much tougher division – and they still have the core that won the Cup two years ago. The Coyotes haven’t won a playoff series since moving from Winnipeg in 1996 – and maybe they never will. The NHL still hasn’t been able to sell the team it bought out of bankruptcy 2-1/2 years ago. The Coyotes brass has hinted there could be good news soon. But is that just because they don’t want a repeat of last year? As the playoffs began, a report said the Coyotes would relocate after elimination. It was wrong, but it still sabotaged them.

Why the underdog is still the underdog:
Captain Jonathan Toews has been skating but has said he still has concussion symptoms. So why is he skating, let alone trying to come back? The power play has been a mess all season, and the goaltending does not match up. Corey Crawford and Ray Emery have been shaky for Chicago, while Mike Smith led the Coyotes to the first division title in team history. The Coyotes went 20-6-5 after Feb. 1. They won their last three meetings with the Blackhawks. Maybe Phoenix will pull it off – a playoff victory and a franchise sale.

    Odds of an upset: Good.

    Pick: Coyotes in 7.

Gotta love Buccigross constantly picking series to go 7 games. So noncommittal

Melrose going with the Kings in the 1st. Odd.
