It was long rumored that MacPhail wanted the commish job while he was here. Like the article says it is pretty hard to predict what will happen. The game is going to be radical different by 2014 with the structure of the leagues changing, and it remains to be seen whether Selig will step down at the end of his contract that has been extended again and again.

Mets GM Sandy Alderson

I'm not an expert on the inner-workings of the MLB, but I've always thought that Alderson was one of the biggest steroid goons in the MLB. How could he be considered as a replacement for Selig (a steroid goon himself)?

I'm not an expert either and this is probably just the author's educated guess, but the article does talk about the commissioner's role in maximizing revenues and owner interests, so if you think Alderson can do that, then that's probably why he was listed.
