Be honest what did you think of the Shawn Camp signing when it happened?

And this is what the Cubs are doing here. I doubt it works out as well as Camp has up to this point, but this is a no risk/low-medium reward signing.

Can't hurt...At the rate they're going, Wood and Marms need to be DFA'd. won't happen, but would be good for the team.

yeah its a crappy situation with the high priced guys. the cubs are handcuffed due to their performance. might want to wait it out i guess.

marmol needs to be thrown back out there, it cant hurt. he has no value pitching in the 7th. pitch him in the 9th and hope he can show promise and move him.

It can hurt. Like, 11 straight sliders for balls before a fastball nicks and elbow then a 3 run double...Pitch him until he learns to throw fastballs for strikes, then consider moving him to set-up/closer.

If Marmol doesn't pitch as a high-leverage reliever then he's essentially useless anyway. Since the Cubs don't have much to lose this season they need to just keep throwing him out there and hope for the best. Of course they could just release him, but there's reason to hope he doesn't suck.

The way I think of it is this...

You have a closer who two seasons ago was one of the best in the business despite his ridiculous walk rate. He might revert to that form or he might continue to suck. Chances are it's somewhere in between. Instead of eating all of the remaining contract (I think it's around $15MM or so) and allowing him to pitch next season, you look at this season (in which the Cubs were projected to win just 70ish games) and you let him keep plugging along. If he's fantastic you can trade him at the deadline or in the offseason. If he's crap you can release him at the end of the season if you can't trade him during the offseason, and since the team wasn't going to make the postseason, it doesn't matter whether they won 60 games or 80 because neither was going to get them in the show.

You do whatever it takes to try to salvage the guy's value before you cut him loose. The salary is a sunk cost, but you have to try.
