Ljajic suspended from Serbian national team - - SI.com

BELGRADE, Serbia (AP) -Midfielder Adem Ljajic has been suspended from the Serbian national team for failing to sing the national anthem before a friendly against Spain, Serbia's football association said Monday.

It said in a statement that Serbia's new coach Sinisa Mihajlovic "sent Ljajic home'' because he did not comply with one of his rules that stipulates players have to sing the anthem before all international matches.

Ljajic, who is a Muslim unlike most of the Serbian team players who are Christian Orthodox, did not sing the anthem "because of his personal reasons,'' the statement said.

"The coach had a meeting with Ljajic,'' the statement said. "After getting the information that because of his personal reasons he did not sing the anthem, Sinisa Mihajlovic told the player to return home.''

Serbia lost 2-0 against Spain in St. Gallen, Switzerland, on Saturday. Serbia, which did not qualify for the European Championship, is to play France in another friendly match later this week.

The association said that when the 20-year-old Ljajic changes his "personal stand,'' he will be allowed back into the squad.

"If I don't respect myself, no one will respect me,'' Ljajic said upon his return to Belgrade on Monday.

Ljajic was involved in an incident earlier this month with his former Fiorentina coach Delio Rossi who slapped him as he returned to the bench after being substituted in a Serie A game. Ljajic had stuck his thumb up ironically. Rossi was fired and Ljajic suspended after the incident.

Here is the song with lyrics which Ljajic, as a Muslim, decided not to sing

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-kc1tafaz4&feature=related]SERBIAN NATIONAL ANTHEM - LYRICS - YouTube[/ame]

New Serbian Coach Sinisa Mihajlovic made the players sign a contract of what TO do and what NOT TO do...singing the anthem was a MUST and Ljajic decided not to for personal reasons.

Players should have the right to choose whether to sing the anthem or not.
This particular player though :nope:
He has had previous incidents with his Fiorentiona coach and in all honestly, doesn't seem like a nice guy at all.

I think the major thing is that he signed a contract with the coach with a list of things he must do if he wanted to represent his country of serbia, and one of those things was sing the anthem.

Serbs are extremely proud people, and Mihajlovic knows it...seeing your supposed top young player not singing the anthem looks bad.

But I agree, he should be able to not sing if he didnt want to...unfortunately to play for Mihajlovic, you must follow his rules I guess.

and yes, Ljajic's reputation is getting worse...first getting slapped, now this...haha

Why does his religion factor in? Is Serbia a country that only accepts Orthodoxy?

serbia's backbone is their eastern orthodox religion (see entire Kosovo conflict ongoing)

the National Anthem has strong allusions to Orthodox christianity

imagine you as a christian in a country like Iran which is heavily Islamic and having to sing a song which alludes to Allah.

Muslims are not seen in the best of light in Serbia either due to their long history with the turks (again, see Kosovo) and the breakup during the 90's with the bosnians

that is kosovo's whole claim to be a sovereign nation.
Kosovars are 90% Albanian ethnically, so they are muslim, but Kosovo is also the birthplace of serbian orthodoxy

Didn't know Albania was Muslim either :shifty:

Higher percentage of Kosovars are Muslim than Albanians though.

Anyway, back to soccer, so do they think Ljajic is more loyal to Kosovo than to Serbia then?

no. He is Serbian and outspoken proud to be playing for Serbia (they have a decent sized muslim minority)

the whole problem is that the new coach made them sign like contracts with Dos and don'ts....singing the anthem was required to play under him for Serbia and he didnt.

Ya, but he also is the one who signed the contract

Love how it has gotten to the point where you have to clarify if you are not trolling in this forum
