The Cubs claimed right-hander Jairo Asencio off of waivers from the Indians, ESPN.com's Keith Law tweets. Chicago designated right-hander Michael Bowden for assignment in a corresponding move.

The Indians acquired Asencio from the Braves for cash at the end of March then designated him for assignment four days ago. The out of options reliever posted a 5.96 ERA with 7.4 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9 in 25 2/3 innings for the Indians this year. He led the International League in saves in 2009 and 2011 and posted a 1.81 ERA with 11.5 K/9 and 3.6 BB/9 in 54 2/3 innings at Triple-A last year.

The Cubs acquired Bowden from the Red Sox in the April trade that sent Marlon Byrd to Boston. The 25-year-old has a 7.45 ERA with 7.4 K/9 and 4.7 BB/9 in 9 2/3 innings with the Cubs since the trade.

Surprised Bowden the odd guy out since he was a Theo guy

Given Bowels performance i wouldn't be shocked if he made it to Iowa.

I'm sure nobody will want to claim him. Relievers are a dime a dozen, especially if they're mediocre.

The walk rate for Ascenio gives me a little hope. To be honest it has to be upgrade.

We seen him already, but he could not find the strike zone. Scott Maine has done pretty good, so he'll be the first one to get a shot.

No we didn't, he has not made his MLB debut.

I think the Cubs saw a chance to add a guy that might be an improvement over what is on the roster. They took it, and I am glad that even in a season this bad they are looking for every opportunity to improve the roster.

He is an improvement over Bowden. Pitchers are more capable of turning it around later in their career and he has a very un-Cub like walk rate. Again the odds are that this guy will suck, but there is a chance that he might not. Again it is nice to see this club actively trying to improve this club without risking the longterm future of the club.

I didn't say you ought to be excited about the move. I suggested we ought to be excited about how active the front office is being. And that this might be an upgrade. Might being the key word.

The Cubs prolly just added him because he doesn't walk anybody. They don't care about pitchers era at this point lol.
