Default OT: More Stat Geek Stuff

A breakdown of how every single player in the NHL was used in the past season, organized by team. It's a 70-page PDF document but worth checking out if you're in to that kind of thing.

Definitely gonna spend the time to read it. Because right now I'm pretty dumb hockey-wise.

A quick lesson on the charts: The farther down a player is, the lower the quality of the competition they faced. The farther to the right a player is, the more often they began their shifts on an offensive-zone faceoff. And that circle around their names? If it's blue, it means that their team was on offense more often than not while they were on the ice. White means the opposite, and the size of the circle tells you how big that difference is.

So, you can gather from the Blackhawks' chart that Brandon Bollig is pretty worthless as a hockey player. Mayers isn't much better, either.

There's quite a few people on this board that would disagree with you.

Assuming you're one of them ... Why, because he (Bollig, mainly) fights?

The days of a guy whose only job is dropping the gloves are long, long gone. They died out with the beginning of the instigator rule. You have to be able to contribute something other than just fights, or you're a waste of a roster spot.

Mayers at least contributes to the PK. What does Bollig do?

No. I'm not one of those guys. Bollig is one of my favorite players just because I enjoy watching fights and he's from St. Louis. But if he left and the Hawks got a more productive 4th liner, I definitely wouldn't be sad.

He didn't say what he disagreed with.. it was probably JUST the Mayers comment.

Seeing that more still makes me think they wont shift away Frolik and he'll remain the winger of the 3rd line going into the year. Mayers did good work on the PK in some games but playing the 7 minutes of 4th line shift with garbage linemates like Scott or Bolig didn't help for much production.

All Bolig did was replace John Scott/Carcillo. With a healthy Carbomb he has no role on the Squad and he will be back in the AHL.

I'll retract my previous comment, as I didn't intend to lump Mayers in with Bollig.

And I like Clyde's point about Mayers' linemates. He didn't get much help.

I thought at times that Mayers played really well and helped his line be a lot better than it really should've been.

I would like to see Mayers stay and have the Hawks put some talent beside him. That fourth line could actually be pretty good. He's a good fourth line center.

    Carcillo-Mayers-Shaw. Sounds good to me.

I wouldn't be too upset about that.

The big problem I think is what to do with the third line. Obviously Bickell and Frolik aren't cutting it there. And you can't keep taking a chance on them and hoping that they'll figure it out.

Each year that you do that, your third line will continue to be invisible. Just wake up and realize that Bickell and Frolik aren't ever going to be what we expected and move on.
