In the long run this deal was good for us in that Detroit didn't get the two of them, but it's going to be a little bad for us because now that Suter is gone you can expect Detroit to throw Special person money at Carle.

both teams will throw crazy money at them, not just the wings. unreal

Both teams? You mean hawks and wings?

Wings have more money, they will overpay more than the hawks can/will

Bad in that it doesn't give us a chance to shore up our D for a reasonable price. They have a HUGE amount of cap money to spend and they have holes to fill and they'll throw whatever money they have to in order to fill them, thus a) outbidding us for guys, and/or b) driving up the price of the guys behind them we might want.

Thats why i think the hawks should explore trades more than FA's now

You're right. At this point with what we need gone or overpriced we need to trade picks/prospects from that bevy of young forwards we have for a Top 4 defender, and try to package Hjalmarsson/picks/prospects for a legit 2nd line center.

The way I see the hawks system is that we have a plethora of guys projected to be top 6...

Our top 6 has hossa (health willing), sharp, kane, and toews locked into it

Not alot of spots gonna be available anytime soon...we can afford to dump a few youngins in the system to improve the nhl club now in other areas (pk, goal, defense)

At this point if we can't make a trade involving prospects like Saad, Morin, Beach, Pirri, or someone else, picks and Hjalmarrson, to fill the defensive hole and the lack of a sniper to replace Kane when he moves to center, I'd do something like take a flyer on Kostitsyn for a few mill and go hard after Carle, or take a flyer on Semin and shore up the D with a potential disaster like Cam Barker who might get his shit together. We're out of the running for sure things now and if we can't make a trade for a sure thing we're going to have to wing it.

If Weber has a decent year then when free agency comes around every defender in the NHL should send him a fruit of the month club membership or something because he's going to drive the price on Dmen straight through the fucking roof. The 5th guy on the list will get 1st guy type money.

If you're interested in getting more info on salary caps, and things like that, I suggest Capgeek.com. There is a ton of great info at that website.

And others may laugh, but play the GM mode in NHL 12. The contract rules in that game are damn near identical to how they are handled in real life. Some of the trades you can pull off aren't as realistic but understanding RFAs, UFAs, offer sheets, etc. can come from spending a lot of time in that game.
