Heck yeah im prepared to raise my glass, get it done
Matt Forte is making steady progress in his quest for a new contract.
The Chicago Bears running back is "extremely close" to a long-term deal with the team, NFL Network's Michael Lombardi reported Saturday, citing a source with knowledge of the situation.
Forte said Friday he planned to spend this weekend on phone with Chicago's front office, amid reports the sides had made "considerable progress."
Forte has yet to sign his one-year, $7.749 million franchise tender. Despite his longstanding unhappiness with the Bears' front office, Forte said last month he had no choice but to play in 2012.
We have Lombardi tracking this closely and will continue to feed you updates. We know Bears fans are prepared to raise their glasses if this one finally gets done.
Per NFL Networks Michael Lombardi:
The Bears and unsigned franchise player Matt Forte are "extremely close" to a long-term deal.

I really hope they don't give him a ridiculous amount of money.

I've heard they're using Marshawn Lynch's deal as a comparison...who got 4 years/$31M...$17M guaranteed. So maybe 5 years/$38M, 20M guaranteed?

Yeah. If he gets a contract that's great as long as the Bears don't spend too much on him. But I don't really give a shit about "being close". If the contract happens, great. If it doesn't, well that sucks for Forte but he's basically got to play this year anyway or he'll lose money.
One could argue that if he doesn't sign a contract, that's bad for the Bears (and the fans) as early as this year...when one of your best players skips training camp b/c he's butthurt, it's going to effect part of the regular-season chemistry. And if he's out of shape (or not in "football shape") then it's another injury waiting to happen. Awesome.

Good lord, make this end already.
The max he should honestly get in my mind is Lynchs deal, I want him getting no more than 18 or so guaranteed, for a back with the mileage he has and is allergic to the endzone it seems.
Look I love (more like used to) matt and think he's a very good (not great) running back. But I understand he wants to get paid, he deserves it also IMO. But 20 guaranteed along w/ 5 years is stupid, unless literally all guaranteed money is in the first 2-3 years.
As a fan I hope they say you can have Marshawns exact contract. Thats a perfect kind of contract for him, but he'll get more.......and I'll be upset and then I'm gonna revert to the same argument when his #s aren't going to be the same as they were because of the real weapons outside now and Running Backs are far and away the easiest position in the NFL to just plug a guy in if you will.
And just for shits and giggles, when was the last time an NFL champion had an "elite" back? Because I can't think of one in very recent memory.
SAMOAN SACKMEN!!
^^Props To Skills^^
His impact goes beyond the stats. Not only his intangables, but there are so many parts of a play that you just dont see or hear about away from the ball. Forte is one of the hardest working players on the team, and has never done anything that negatively impacted his team. The teams that just have mediocre running backs are great because of everything else. Add a guy like Forte to say GB, and they are the best team in the league by far. When you have a special talent like Forte, lock him up. I agree that 5 years is too much, but as far as the money goes, he deserves 8 mil a year and probably close to 20 mil guaranteed. Thats less than DeAngelo Williams, and Forte is MUCH better obviously. If an overpaid Williams is makes more than Forte, it just won't seem right.
Johnny Knox, you will be missed
