Garza would be hard to pass through waivers. They probably will have to trade him this offseason, if anything.

Something I learned is that since Garza isn't technically DL'ed and his arm is fine, they could still trade him even with the threat of injury and tell the other team to deal with it. Less likely, but definitely possible. The Cubs could, behind the scenes, be telling teams that they're trying to save a Garza start for whoever they might be dealing him to.

Just a write-up to summarize the logical conclusion that Garza isn't going anywhere...

It wouldn't be a bad thing if we were "stuck" with Garza anyway.

Whaat gets old is the assumption is that the Cubs are 4 years away. The division is weak and anything can happen in the postseason. I am not beating the Cubs are going anywhere soon, but the lineup could be a lot better quick with some luck. Next year is probably closer to this year, but beyond that who the fuck knows what is going on.

    BP blows.

Realistically its close to 4 years. In no way are the cubs competing with real proven talent of ST Louis and Cincy.

Unless Theo goes on a shopping spree and buys players it is what it is.

We don't fucking know what this roster is going to look like past the next season. That's the fucking point.

Do you think that every spec is going to pan out? Of course we dont but the cubs dont have the pitching at all in their system, the position players may work out, but all of them will have to work. Its rebuilding, and its not a 2 year plan than all of a sudden they are going to compete. If you want to believe that they will contend so be it, just dont complain when you get kicked in the nuts. Garza has no business being on a team that is rebuilding. hell, they are still in the demolition process as most analysts put it.

We don't know what the prospects are going to be. Not everyone is going to pan out, but is Josh Vitters a league average starter? Is Junior Lake? Is Brett Jackson? Is Matt Szczur? The answer to those questions determine a lot about the quality of the rosters in the next two years. We aren't even talking about the real blue chip prospects at this point. The idea is really straight forward if the bullpen straightens out with the variety of options to pull it together and the lineup develops this could be a slightly over .500 team and that might be good enough to qualify for the playoffs in this craptastic division. The only point is that we don't fucking know. The Cubs aren't the fucking Royals that are going to have to develop every signal player. Probably the Cubs are three or four years away from being realistic competitive, but this idea that it is guaranteed is dumb since as know a lot can happen to every team in 24 months.

Yeah, if Garza was extended you'd still be getting him while he's in his prime, but it's obviously not ideal. That said, with the extra year of control, the Cubs don't have to trade him now, or even at the waiver deadline. They can wait for the offseason.

Short answer...it would be very difficult for the Cubs to compete in short fashion, but it's not impossible. Just going to have to rely on the stars aligning etc.

I assume this was posted elsewhere...

Teams continue calling the Cubs to check in on Garza, Rosenthal reports. However, the Cubs won’t offer a discount based on the fluid buildup in Garza’s triceps and a trade remains “doubtful.” Garza isn’t expected to pitch until after the trade deadline.

Hasn't been posted and that is why a trade is unlikely. The Cubs were rightfully asking for the moon. Teams are still checking in, but since they were unwilling to give that up before this it is unlikely that they will now. Garza won't make it through waivers, but I am sure the Cubs will try. Garza being here through the season seems pretty assured right now.

He's going to be worth less this offseason than last offseason. The Cubs probably should've just traded him in December.

We were saying the same thing about Dempster and Theo/Jed pulled a rabbit out of their hat until Dempster put the kibosh on that. I would make another incredibly nerdy reference explaining how I feel about the cubs right now, but was contemplating making a whole thread about that for my own self indulgence.

What the Cubs can get for Garza now, may be similiar to what they can get for him in the off-season. So, I say try one last time to lock him up. But that des not seem likely as the Cubs have not talked a contract extension since the Winter.
