    Danny Knobler on twitter:
It's a longshot, but Cubs and Dodgers have discussed adding Soriano to a Dempster deal. Also talked LaHair.

Here's the article, and it would make some sense since the Dodgers want to buy their way to a better team without sacrificing prospects. Salary relief from Soriano for Dempster wouldn't be a bad thing given the position we are in.

I don't think the Cubs care about the salary so much as they care about pieces. Would throwing in Soriano for free allow them to get the prospects? I'll do the clicky now to read.

I agree that the Cubs want prospects, but they are in a situation where they are stuck with Dempster unless they can get something from a team that also doesn't care about salary but prospects. Their crap prospects and some salary relief from Soriano might be the best the Cubs can do.

Well, the Dodgers did just pay all of Hanley's contract AND gave the Marlins some prospects (which made no sense to me) so let's see what happens.

I'm sure the Cubs would have to pay most of Sori's contract in this situation, but this is at least one area where the goals of the Cubs and Dodgers might match up a little is all I was thinking.

I guess money saved is money saved, but they should do this separately in my opinion. Maybe send LaHair instead as a pot-sweetener (hey, he's cheap) and see if they can get the original prospect package. I wonder if the Rangers can actually outbid everyone for either Shields or Greinke to force the Dodgers' hand.

i'm for trading sori and dempster...as long as we get some financial compensation and some prospects...and soriano waives his NTC(which he should)

and i assume the cubs will eat a bit of soriano's salary.....but we'll still save

    Correct.

I think you can boo him all you want as long as he doesn't actually suck when he pitches
Not a single real Cub Fan or a real baseball fan should boo Demp. It's not his fault.

Well, in a way, it is his fault because he wouldn't go away, but that's his right and the fans can boo. I just don't want him to suck at baseball when he's still a Cub so we can still either dump him at the waiver deadline or get the draft pick.

It is his right, but it screwed this team. That is the bottomline, and as a Cubs fan I don't have to be happy or have warm fuzzy feelings because he used his 10-5 rights. Looking at things now it seems unlikely that he will booed strongly if he takes the mound on Wrigley, but if Dempster finishes the year out here his legacy is costing this team Randall Delgado.

Nothing amazing, but he was the most consistent pitcher on this team for half a decade. With his charity work and media friendly persona he had a decent shot at getting a job with the organization or media once he was done. Bottomline is this is that while it is his right to do this, it has made this team worse going forward.

He was a good pitcher who was instrumental in two division winning teams and who formed a charitable foundation in the area. It will all be forgotten because of the trade that wasn't, just like fans forgot that Sammy Sosa was an entertaining player for a long time for the Cubs because he left a game early. Fans will be fans.

While I agree that it would have been nice to land a good prospect, there's no guarantee that Delgado would be as effective as he was in 2010 (though his track record suggests he'd be okay) and you also don't know whether Dempster would turn down the qualifying offer and how that future pick will pan out. If Dempster stays his production probably remains fairly level (his ERA will probably fluctuate) but that's the only thing he can control. I think this could be salvaged but it's definitely a bummer to have lost out on Delgado.

Delgado isn't a guaranteed stud, but a guy that has put 4 ERA as a 22 year old in the majors is a huge loss for the future. No way around that unless the Theo has another rabbit.

Well, this and the Garza thing is out of the front office's control now. Dempster was within his rights and shit like this always happens, just not as out-in-the-open as this situation was. If we are worried about the far future then the comp pick is probably still in play. We'll see if Dempster pitches on Tuesday night first, though.

Nothing going to happen, if we didn't have to deal with NTC's and 10/5's our FO could do something, but not now I guess as far as major moves. Have to hope we get a biter on Soriano and LaHair, not much else to do.
