CLEVELAND - According to the White Sox's Saturday game notes, mercurial veteran Freddy Garcia will have his next start skipped.

The Sox have a day off on Monday. In past years, that could enable them to give veteran Mark Buehrle an extra day of rest to preserve his left arm. But according to the game notes, Buehrle is scheduled to start Wednesday night, Garcia's day to pitch, against Tampa Bay and the Rays' predominately left-handed hitting lineup.

Jake Peavy will start the series finale against Tampa Bay on Thursday, according to the game notes.

Garcia admitted to reporters on Friday that he needs to be more consistent. After allowing 40 hits in 21 2/3 innings in spring training, Garcia temporarily relieved the fears of the Sox by limiting Minnesota to three hits in seven innings in his first start on April 10. But he didn't stabilize his situation after allowing seven runs on eight hits in three-plus innings against Toronto on Thursday.

Garcia has been used exclusively as a starter throughout his career, and the bullpen has a streak of 19 1/3 scoreless innings without possessing a true long reliever. So it remains to be seen what the Sox have in store for Garcia.

He's not what he once was, they'd be better off starting Daniel Hudson.

You can't set high expectations on your projected fifth starter. Some teams would take what Freddy did in his first start against Minny and take something similar along the way. Freddy will be fine as long as he can locate which is key now in his day (considering what he's been through).

I'm pretty sure they're pushing back Freddy's start so he does't get absolutely torched by the Rays. They have to know that he's just getting by with marginal MLB "stuff", and his 84-87 mph fastball from the right side will just get destroyed by the better-hitting teams in the league.

Now the question becomes: are they doing this more out of a want to get their better pitchers more starts or because Ozzie feels the need to protect Freddy so he doesn't have to shoot Old Yeller and call up a young pup? I'm pretty sure both play into the decision, it's just a matter of how much they do.
