Bulls can't handle Linsanity, fall to Kings

Jeremy Lin showed everyone at the Arco Arena how he captivated fans all over the world last season with a "Linsanity" like performance on Monday against the Bulls. Lin scored 26 points and dished out 13 assists as the Kings were able to fend off the Bulls. Peja Stojakovic had 28 points (6-10 from 3) while Shawn Kemp added 23 points, 11 rebounds, and 3 blocks. The Bulls found themselves unable to get baskets down the stretch as they just fell short of a comeback effort. Paul Pierce led the Bulls with 37 points, but shot just 2-10 from 3. Allen Iverson had 23 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists before fouling out with 2 minutes to go in the 4th. New acquisition Dennis Rodman did not disappoint with 13 points and 12 rebounds (6 offensive), but Doug Christie struggled, shooting just 4-13 from the field.

"At the end of the day, we just couldn't execute down the stretch," said Pierce. "We had a lot of chances to take the lead and fell short each time. I don't know what happened really, we just could not put the ball in the basket when we needed to."

"Turnovers in the first half hurt us," said Earl Monroe, who had 11 points and 4 assists off the bench. "They were able to get out in transition so easily. With Jeremy and Shawn running the floor like that they were hard to stop. Then you had Peja draining 3s while we couldn't hit the ocean from outside at times. The momentum seemed to be against us the whole game."

The Sacramento defense in the paint was stifling as they racked up 7 blocks while also forcing 12 steals.

"Personally, I thought there were a lot of no calls in the paint," said Iverson, who was victim to 4 of the Kings' 7 blocks. "I thought I was getting hammered and mobbed on a lot of those drives, but it is what it is. Can't get everything. Plus Paul was able to get to the line 12 times so it's not like they let everything go. Maybe if we were able to hit a few more 3s or get a few more calls our way or get a few more offensive rebounds things would've been different. We just gotta bounce back next game."

The Bulls will play Michael Jordan and the '85-'86 Bulls in their next game.

Finished studying a bit early...so I figured I'd do stuff. It's late now...oh well.

Bulls acquire Haslem; sign Evans

In yet another roster tweak the Chicago Bulls have acquired F Udonis Haslem from the '85-'86 Chicago Bulls in exchange for F Sidney Green and C Tree Rollins.

Haslem was averaging 5 points and 6.5 rebounds for the '85-'86 Bulls through 5 games this season. Green was averaging just 8 minutes and 3.1 points and 2.5 rebounds through 6 games with the Bulls. Similarly, Rollins was averaging 1.6 points and 2.2 rebounds through 6 games.

"With this deal on the table, we felt like we could improve even more with our bench depth," said Gar Forman. "Sidney and Tree weren't really finding spots in the rotation to contribute and we feel that Udonis could potentially be a big contributor off our bench. He's a great defender and rebounder and we think he can help our team in a lot of ways defensively. Offensively, he's got a knockdown midrange jumper and he's always looking to crash the offensive glass. I think he can fit in very well with the guys we have here."

In a subsequent move, the Bulls signed F Reggie Evans. Evans, a known rebounding specialist, is expected to be an emergency backup for Haslem and incumbent Nick Collison.

"Reggie's thing is obviously rebounding," said Gar Forman. "We know that's what he brings to the table coming into the game. We'll leave it up to Tom to decide how much he plays, but if any one of our bigs goes down with an injury we know Reggie will be able to contribute right away at a high level."

All players will be in uniform for the next game."

Bulls fend off Jordan and '85-'86 Bulls behind Monroe's 18

The Bulls' efforts to improve their rebounding seemed to pay off at last as they squared off against their 80s counterparts. With a 50-34 advantage on the glass, the Bulls found themselves ahead for much of the game instead of playing from behind. Dennis Rodman contributed another double double with 14 points and 11 rebounds while adding 2 blocks. Allen Iverson added 17 points, 8 assists, and 3 steals, but struggled shooting against the '85-'86 Bulls' interior defense, shooting just 5-12. The '85-'86 Bulls were led by Michael Jordan's 33 points, which led all scorers, but he received little help outside of Nate Robinson's 18 points. Omer Asik was a factor defensively, but contributed just 4 rebounds as the Bulls were able to crash the offensive glass to the tune of 13 offensive rebounds.

"When we can crash the glass like that and force turnovers we're a hard team to beat," said Tom Thibodeau. "We still have a ways to go defensively, but we're taking steps in the right direction."

The key for the Bulls was Earl Monroe's play off the bench. Monroe led the Bulls in scoring with 18 points and was able to help the Bulls keep the lead while the starters were on the bench with timely baskets.

"Earl's just a baller," said Iverson. "He came up huge this game. Every time we needed a basket to stop a run or to get us out of a rough patch, he provided that for us. He's a great finisher around the basket and he's real slick with the ball in his hands. He's a huge part of our team. I know he was disappointed about losing his starting spot, but he's a team player. He never complains, he just does his job."

Though the Bulls were able to get the 9 point victory without too much trouble, Tom Thibodeau still seemed dissatisfied.

"We're still turning over the ball too much and not pressuring the ball enough," said Thibodeau. "We've got to force more turnovers so that we can get in our transition game. We have great transition players, but they won't ever get the chance to use their skills unless we get ourselves in transition. AI's gotta get in the passing lanes more. Doug's got to get in there more. We've got guys who have done this their whole careers, we just have to tap into that."

"Our perimeter shooting has also been awful," continued Thibodeau. "I think we're something like 31% on the season. We have guys who can shoot the 3 who just aren't knocking them down. Getting their confidence up is going to be something we'll be focusing on going forward. We need that outside presence to space the floor for guys like Earl and Allen to get to the basket."

The Bulls will get a chance to test this against Michael Jordan and the Pelicans on Thursday.

Yup...MJ two games in a row. Go figure.

I'm back

Iverson leads 4th quarter charge past Pelicans

It appeared as though Michael Jordan and the Pelicans had the Bulls' number early in the game, taking an early lead and being able to hold off the Bulls' runs. Nate McMillan seemed to lock down Allen Iverson as he shot just 1-5 in the 1st quarter and 33% overall in the 1st half while only getting 1 assist. It was Paul Pierce who kept the Bulls in the game in the 1st half, scoring 14 of his 18 points in that half. Behind his efforts and some key baskets by Earl Monroe, who was hampered by a bruised heel suffered in practice days before, and Udonis Haslem, the Bulls rallied from a 1st quarter deficit to tie the game at the half.

However, Michael Jordan proved to be unstoppable as he lit up the Bulls to the tune of 40 points, 22 of which came in the 2nd half. Jordan gave the Pelicans a 10 point lead late in the 3rd and it seemed that the Bulls' chances were cut even shorter when Joakim Noah twisted his ankle after grabbing a rebound and had to come out of the game. However, behind the efforts of a rejuvenated Iverson and key bench play once again from Monroe and Haslem, the Bulls rallied to tie the game. Noah was also able to play through the injury to close out the game, grabbing key offensive rebounds and locking down Pelicans big man Serge Ibaka, who was held to just 2 points.

The 4th quarter was Iverson's time as he and Jordan battled back and forth for control of the game. Key steals by Doug Christie gave the Bulls the momentum they needed to pull away from the Pelicans and it was Iverson who hit the go ahead basket to put the Bulls up for good. Iverson finished the game with 26 points, bouncing back in a big way from his poor 1st half. He received help from Paul Pierce's 18 points and 4 assists and Doug Christie's 12 points. Udonis Haslem added 14 points and 6 rebounds off the bench while Earl Monroe had 11 points and 4 assists.

"It was a good team win," said Monroe, who is day to day with his heel injury. "We were struggling early on, no doubt about that, but we hung in there and didn't give up. Lots of guys stepped it up at different points in the game. Paul was huge early. U was key off the bench all game. Doug did a good job making sure MJ didn't drop 60 on us. It took everyone to come out with this win."

"Any time you go up against the greatest player who ever lived, it's going to be a rough time," said Dennis Rodman, who had 10 points and 6 rebounds, his first game without a double double in a Bulls uniform. "Mike's just an unstoppable force, but we did a good job keying in on the rest of the team to make sure they didn't beat us. He can definitely beat teams by himself, but fortunately tonight wasn't one of those nights."

"There's still some work to be done," said the never satisfied Tom Thibodeau. "We still need to work on not turning the ball over and making smart decisions. Our ball handling and ball movement wasn't as good this game. Our transition defense needs to be better and we need guys to be more aggressive on defense. We're getting better, but there's lots of room for improvement."

Iverson, Pierce lead Bulls over Hornets

The Bulls faced a tough challenge on Saturday night as they visited Eric Gordon, Moses Malone, and the Charlotte Hornets. The Bulls were without starting center Joakim Noah, who sat out the game with an ankle injury suffered in their previous game against the New Orleans Pelicans. Against a team boasting a starting frontcourt of Malone and Vlade Divac, his loss was felt from the beginning. Nazr Mohammed was given the starting nod, but played just 16 minutes with the Bulls opting to try using a smaller lineup with Udonis Haslem at center.

Dennis Rodman, far and away the Bulls' best post defender with Noah out, was matched up with Malone, but could not contain the low post force as Malone scored 14 1st quarter points while leading the Hornets to a 6 point lead. The Bulls struggled from the field in the 1st, scoring just 20 points, well below their usual production, and quickly found themselves fighting to keep themselves from a double digit deficit. Paul Pierce in particular struggled mightily in the 1st half, scoring just 5 points on 27% shooting while being guarded by Andrei Kirilenko. It was Doug Christie and Earl Monroe who kept the Bulls in the game in the 1st half with Christie scoring 14 of his 18 points in the half while Monroe added 10 points off the bench. Monroe really turned it on in the 3rd quarter, bringing the Bulls even with the Hornets, going back and forth with Eric Gordon, who had 21 points in the 2nd half.

Behind Monroe's 15 point 3rd quarter and a rejuvenated effort from Pierce and Allen Iverson, the Bulls fought their way to a small lead going into the 4th. However, it was a surprising spark from Hornets reserve Terrence Williams, who had 20 points and 5 steals on the night, that gave the Hornets what appeared to be another double digit lead, quickly reversing the Bulls' momentum. Despite the seemingly overwhelming odds, Allen Iverson and Paul Pierce brought the Bulls back to tie the game before Iverson hit Bill Walker for a go ahead layup. Rodman was able to keep Malone from scoring on 3 straight possessions despite being unable to do so all game prior, and the Bulls were able to come out with the win.

"It was really all heart," said Iverson, who had 26 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 assists. "We were down a man, someone who plays a huge role on this team, but we were still able to get it done. We're not out here playing for ourselves. We're playing for each other, we're playing to win. We ain't perfect, but we're establishing ourselves as one of the best teams in the league."

"When we get stops, that's when we really get rolling," said Doug Christie, who had his best game in a Bulls uniform with 18 points on 5-9 shooting and 2 steals. "The defense is what really gets this team going. Dennis and Jo really set the tone for us defensively and with their rebounding. It was tough not having Jo in there, but we were able to get through that and come out with the win."

"We're getting better each game," said Tom Thibodeau. "We still need to try to limit turnovers and careless mistakes, but we're making strides. I think our offense is getting there and our defense is getting there. I have a lot of confidence in these guys, top to bottom."

The Bulls will play the Brooklyn Nets in their next game.

Bulls sign Jamario Moon

Following their game against the Charlotte Hornets the Bulls announced that they have signed 6th year veteran forward Jamario Moon to a one year contract. Moon, who has played for 5 different clubs in his career, has career averages of 6.3 points per game, 4.3 rebounds per game, and 1 assist per game while shooting 46% from the field and 33% from 3. Moon is best known for his appearance in the 2008 Slam Dunk Contest.

"We were looking at adding another wing who could get up and down the court," said Bulls GM Gar Forman. "Jamario is obviously a very athletic player and we feel he can add a different look to our team at times. He's also a very good defensive player and that's something we feel he can contribute right away. He'll be fighting for a spot in the rotation, obviously, but we feel he's a player we can plug in with confidence."
