OT: Helmet off, play dead?

When did this happen? They just mentioned it in the MIA-DAL game. The rare plays where a helmet flies off and the player keeps going are fun to watch. I guess I understand the rule, but wish they'd let the play continue.

Down on the high school level as well. A new rule we also have this year is if a helmet-less player engages in the play, but is not the ball carrier, it is a 15 yard illegal participation call.

Makes complete sense. I'm behind that type of safety.

Here's the play that sort of led to this rule.

I know in college, if anybody's helmet comes off on the field, he's gotta sit out the next play. It's to encourage them to not be lazy when buckling their chinstraps.

This is the rule:

a play will be blown dead as soon as the runner's helmet comes off during the play (the ball carrier). This only applies to player with the ball. As soon as the helmet comes off, the play is dead and the ball is spotted where the helmet came off. It will be treated as if the player was down by contact.

Simple rule. I wonder if any players are planning on ripping a helmet off of any player they deem too hard to tackle?

I took a look, and I couldn't find any written rule against pulling a player's helmet off, which I find hard to believe, but I'd assume, if it looked intentional, it would be called as a personal foul unnecessary roughness.
