The best way to look at this type of play is that it is just like a penalty. We have all seen times when the D-line jumps offside, then the QB goes deep, knowing that the worst case scenario is they can accept the 5-yard penalty and play the down over.

As SOON as the punting team touches the ball, there can be no worse an outcome than placing the ball where the initial contact occurred. The receiving team can do anything they want (just like the example above) without any negative consequences.

you are making your explanation way too complicated with several scenarios. The rule is quite simple: If the kicking team is the first to touch the ball, the receiving team has the option of taking the ball where it was touched, or where the ball ends. When the Vikings touched it at the 1 yard line, and then it was pushed out of bounds behind the endzone, we had the option of placing the ball on either the 1 or the 20. We chose the 20.

Trestman should be fired for that decision, we need to work on our 99 yard TD drives!

basically if the kicking team touches the ball at all you might as well go get it and see if you can get better position - because you've got nothing to lose. Devin hester used to try to do this a lot a few years back on punts, if the opponents touch it first.
