Ran across an interesting item in the Miami Heat game notes last week. It listed the league leaders in steals plus blocks, which are obviously the two main defensive categories.

The Heat wanted to point out that Dwyane Wade ranks a close second in the category to Orlando center Dwight Howard 275-262. In that loss to the Bulls last Thursday, the Richards High School product became the first player listed at 6-foot-4 or smaller to record 100 blocks in a season.

Beyond that, LeBron James ranked third in the category at 217, followed closely by the Bulls' own Tyrus Thomas in fourth at 216 (135 blocks and 81 steals).

The best I could tell, Chris Paul ranks fifth with 193 steals and 9 blocks, then Jason Kidd and Denver's Chris Andersen.

Obviously, Thomas is running with some pretty good company as a defender. I doubt if he's going to make the all-defensive team this year, but he certainly has the tools to be one of the league's best defenders. It's easy look at Thomas' defense and Joakim Noah's improving offense (8-of-10 shots for 16 points against Toronto on Sunday) right now and imagine the Bulls being in decent shape inside by sticking with that pair for a few more years.

:woohoo:

Speaking about defense, what about Rose. when he first came out of college many said he was a really good defender, even NBA 2k9 says, "And he sure is a great defender". not to pick on Rose but he also has the tools to become a very good defender. Why do you guys think that he has struggled so much at that end? inexperiece, better talent, dosen't trust other on defense or just to much energy spent on the offensive side?

Tyrus is already a super stat stuffer. I can't wait to see how good he will be in 2 years. The sad thing is we might have to see him reach his potential on another team and I think I might be alright with that as long as we get a superstar back in return.

I dont think tryus is as good a defender as his stats show him to be. Dont get me wrong, he's an adequete defender, but he's just scratching the surface. If he can put on some more weight, maybe 15,and retain his athleticism , he'll be well on his way.

I completely agree, and I have the video to prove it. I just have to figure out how to upload it. His defensive fundamentals when it comes to boxing out are absolutely pathetic.

Totally agree. He relies on his athleticism far more than he should. He should be blocking out more instead of just watching and trying to outjump everyone, or move feet to get in front of someone. He just lacks a lot of fundamentals on the defensive end but then again we just don't have anyone in the coaching department that can teach him (just like Rose).

Also, another thing about Tyrus and Noah is, they both give too much ground to whoever tries to post them up instead of being physical and pushing them out, they give so much ground that when they try to block, it's too late coz they are underneath the basket.

I was just about to say that. He needs to work on boxing out. At least he's heading into the right direction which is a plus.

I think Paxson needs to add a defensive specialist to the staff this summer.

Tyrus is probably one of the best weak side defenders, but one of worst one on one defenders and on help defense. As for Rose he gets in most of his trouble with rookies mistakes that you have to adjust too

I knew Tyrus was picking up steals and blocks at a high rate, but I was shocked at this! If Tyrus ever hones his offensive skills he will be one hell of a player.

I was going to comment on this first posting, but it looks like many of my fellow Bulls fans already interjected. Tyrus Thomas's stats are ridiculously misleading. He can block shots and he can....wait, thats all he can do!!

Tyrus is an awful man on man defender. I can't rebound worth a damn either. Because Tyrus is such a terrible man on man defender our front court continues to be one of the worst defensive front courts in the leauge. I love a guy who can jump high and block shots, however, if every single big in the leauge from Al Horford to Darko, has a field day and makes you look like a little bitch..you suck at D.

Okay, got it!

He's not a good man defender...yet. Whoever mentioned the big-man coach is right, it seems like Tyrus enjoys the statistic side of defense and maybe with some good fundamental teachings his man D and rebounding instincts will catch-up.

also.... I too enjoyed that podcast, hilarious.

People, people. What's happening?

I love tyrus thomas. He is a fantastic weak side defender because of his athletic ability. My issue with tyrus is that he gets bullied against the very good power fowards in this league. He's still young, raw (i hate using that word), and has time to build upper body muscle. He has a unique ability to show weakness on an offensive player, then rise above the rim and surprise them with the block. That ploy is good against the weak offensive player like roy hibbert. But go up against the better power fowards, that play doesnt work. Add muscle, and the boy will be all gooooood.

Oh, and tyrus, stop shooting. You're driving me nuts.

It's an incredible statistical achievement that Tyrus has a PER over 15 (making him above the league average) while only being able to block shots. He must block 20 a game to make up for all the other things he's not doing.

It's time to update your scouting report past his rookie season.

Tyrus, relative to starting PFs, is at least average at:
ball handling, passing, stealing, rebounding, shot blocking, and drawing fouls. I'd say his defense is above average too due to it's game changing nature at time though he can struggle occasionally in man defense or with focus.

I'm not sure why people hate on Tyrus and call him one dimensional, he's becoming a fairly well rounded player, and he still only has the minutes of a typical 2nd year guy. Another season and he could be really good. At worst, he's still a starting caliber PF in the NBA right now.

Yes he could. He could be the 4th best player on a contending team. You've gotta realize that contending teams have superstars surrounded by talent and role players. Tyrus would be a defensive role player who can run the floor on a contending team.

Granted, the coach on a contending team wouldn't use Tyrus the way Vinny is using him. He certainly wouldn't be allowed to take all those jumpers if he were one, say, the Cavs.

I often measure talent by "how many players need to be better than this guy on your team to win a title". With Tyrus, I'd say the answer is four, so he could be a starter on one. Of course it depends how much better they are then him.

He wouldn't be a top three starter on a contending team, but he could maybe be a 4th starter with a team that had an elite big three and definitely a 5th. If he continues his present trend of improvement, he'll absolutely be a 4th starter on a contending team, and he may be able to work up to being a 3rd starter on a contending team.
